U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for March 29: Mom and Pop Businesses
Posted by: thepinetree on 03/29/2017 07:48 AM
Washington, DC...Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau: Profile America — Wednesday, March 29th. While shoppers and communities often welcome the opening of a major department store or a branch of a big-box chain, they are also the cause of some concern. Small local businesses face greater competition, yet those small businesses are an outsized engine of economic growth. Additionally, they are important distinguishing features in local communities. That's why today is Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. In 2012, there were nearly 28 million business firms in the U.S., but only 5.4 million of them had paid employees. In that group, over 2.7 million-- about half-- were enterprises having four or fewer employees. Almost 10 million of America's business enterprises are women-owned. You can find current data on the country's economy by downloading the 'America's Economy' mobile application at www.census.gov/mobile.

New York, NY...The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had increased in February, improved sharply in March. The Index now stands at 125.6 (1985=100), up from 116.1 in February. The Present Situation Index rose from 134.4 to 143.1 and the Expectations Index increased from 103.9 last month to 113.8. The monthly Consumer Confidence Survey®, based on a probability-design random sample, is conducted for The Conference Board by Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and analytics around what consumers buy and watch. The cutoff date for the preliminary results was March 16.
New York, NY....Stock indexes have turned lower on failure by the Republicans to pass the Obamacare replacement on Friday. The larger issue for the markets is whether this will slow down tax cuts and other plans to get the GDP rate back up to the 4% range. Even though this try failed the underlying problems with the healthcare sector are not going away. Many are now openly criticizing Republicans for not having a consensus plan in place after running, winning elections and fundraising on "Repeal & Replace". Republicans seem to be finding it harder to govern than just be the opposition.

NFL Team Owners Approve Raiders' Move To Las Vegas
Posted by: thepinetree on 03/27/2017 11:28 AM
Phoenix, AZ...NFL team owners voted to approve the Raiders' proposal to relocate to Las Vegas during the Annual League Meeting in Phoenix on Monday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The final tally to approve the move was 31-1, Rapoport added. The Raiders won't immediately move to Las Vegas since construction of their planned $1.7 billion domed stadium isn't expected to be completed until 2020. They will play this season at the Oakland Coliseum and have a contract option to play there again in 2018. After that, they likely will have to find a temporary venue to play in until their new stadium just off the Las Vegas strip is built.
Calaveras County Sheriff Rick DiBasilio On Marijuana & Calaveras Public Safety

San Andreas, CA...I have been repeatedly asked about Marijuana and the safety of Calaveras citizens. Last year the voters of California chose to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana and to allow the small scale cultivation of marijuana. In addition, marijuana cultivation has now become a land use issue based upon decisions by the voters and the Board of Supervisors. In 2016, the previous Calaveras County Board of Supervisors chose to allow large commercial cultivation inside of residential areas of Calaveras County through an “Urgency Ordinance.”
