New York, NY...Volatility was the key feature of today's trading session. After falling by as many as 611 points at session lows the Dow roared back late in the session to end in positive territory. The S&P 500 & Nasdaq were also so positive on the day.

Purchase, NY...A robust shopping season from before Thanksgiving through Christmas has given retailers much to cheer about this year. According to Mastercard SpendingPulseTM, which provides insights into overall retail spending trends across all payment types, including cash and check, holiday sales increased 5.1 percent to more than $850 billion this year – the strongest growth in the last six years. Online shopping also saw large gains of 19.1 percent compared to 2017.

Markets are still down for the year but this erases some of the doom and gloom mood of the 600 point drop Christmas Eve.

Angels Camp, CA...Long-time Angels Camp residents Joan and George Loomis, who have fostered 1,200 children in Calaveras County and volunteered countless community service hours, were the Grand Marshals in the 28th annual Angels Camp Parade of Lights beginning on November 24. Dwayne Garcia, president of the Angels Camp Business Association, which hosts the parade and the annual Downtown Angels Holiday Open House the Saturday after Thanksgiving, said he was delighted that Joan and George were the Grand Marshals this year.

Columbia, CA...It is with great disappointment that I announce that the District has formally and totally refused to negotiate with YFA over the advisory terms of the factfinding report during the 10-day period concluding impasse, as provided for under the state bargaining law. Accordingly, the YFA Executive Board has called for a strike for Spring Semester. We have no choice, as the District even refuses to meet during the last window required for negotiations.
