Yes, There Is a Need in Calaveras County. Habitat for Humanity Update from by Myron Kelso |
Posted by: thepinetree on 11/21/2013 06:32 PM
|
San Andreas, CA....The U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (Feb 2013) identified8.3% of the children living in Calaveras County are living in crowded households. A crowded household is identified as more than one person per room of the house (counting all rooms except the bathroom). Would you be willing to share one bedroom with 3, 4, 5 or more persons? A 2012 Point In Time (PIT) Count showed that Amador and Calaveras Counties had a combined homeless population of 379 with an estimated 24 homeless veterans in that mix. And, according to the Calaveras Works & Human Services Agency, even with a ‘best effort’ the PIT Count does not collect data on many of the homeless in the County and therefore the numbers are likely much higher. In May 2011, the Calaveras Board of Supervisors was briefed on the Point In Time Homeless Survey. Those numbers showed 15 one parent families and 12 two parent families living homeless our area. 37% of the homeless had an income source; it just was not enough to feed and house a family...

Bear Valley, CA..The 10th Annual Wintersports History Night is Decemeber 14 at the Bear Valley Lodge, Cathedral Lounge. The honoree this year is Harry Schimke who for many in the area needs no introduction and without Harry and the entire Schimke Family our area would not be the same. The Ebbetts Pass Historical Association was established in the summer of 2003, by a handful of Bear Valley residents, following many discussions of earnest that we should start something to preserve history of our area and make it available to the public. Our goal at the beginning was not only to capture memories of the High Sierra -Hwy 4, but also to gather and preserve the history along the Hwy 4 corridor from Arnold up to the summit...

|
San Andreas, CA...November 20, 2013 — John and Michelle Rugo of Murphys have been donating ranch raised beef to the Food Bank over the past years. They recently read an article about food needs in Calaveras County and decided to do something about it. They brought in 160 pounds of fresh hamburger and steaks to the Food Bank. They have been long-time supporters of many organizations in the community and Michelle was on the initial Food Bank Community Garden Committee. “We are so grateful for the donation,” said Jeannie Hayward, Food Bank director. “We don’t get a lot of fresh meat because it is so expensive to purchase. We just got green and red bell peppers in – so we will be handing out the hamburger and peppers with a stuffed pepper recipe.”
