Letter to the Editor~by Les Martin

"QUALIFICATIONS KEY IN LOCAL ELECTIONS...A few months ago our current Treasurer/Tax Collector placed before the BOS a draft ordinance which would have established specific requirements for the office she was vacating due to her retirement. I was shocked when the BOS turned down this request. I addressed the BOS in public session that it seemed ridiculous that “fogging the mirror” be the only qualification for such an important position....

"DON’T ASK BILL...Who’s paying for those nasty mailers attacking Supervisor Merita Callaway? Don’t ask Bill McManus or his supporters in the Political Action Committee. They won’t tell, even if it means thumbing their noses at the law. What is McManus’s position on four basic issues facing the County? Don’t ask. He’s refused to put them in writing for a local newspaper, suggesting he’s afraid someone might hold him accountable.....

"Free Enterprise vs Socialism....That choice for you to make, is already here, in Calaveras County, and with the elections for County Supervisors in District 1 and 3, and we have to choose whether we want to remain a Free Enterprise society, with property rights protected by the United States Constitution, or begin the road to European Socialism.....

Letter to the Editor~by Sheriff Dennis Downum

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 05/28/2010 09:14 AM
"Dear Editor:

SUBJECT: Clarification...A candidate for Calaveras County Sheriff continues to tell citizens that the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is “hiding over nine hundred thousand dollars” that could be used to keep deputies. I would like to clarify this issue. When the candidate first made this statement, the fact that we had over $900K in our budget was technically correct however; that money has been allocated for over a year by various resolutions from the Board of Supervisors. It should be noted that this candidate was present when these funds were allocated.....

Dear Editor, Please consider my letter regarding Property Rights...We all work hard for our paycheck. That paycheck is our money. With the money we earn, we buy property; property in the form of food, clothes, transportation, housing and groceries. What we earn is literally the fruit of our labor. When we purchased our property, it was with an understanding of its responsibilities and its potential. Our Founding Fathers knew that the respect for and protection of the rights to our property were key to maintaining peace in the community and achieving prosperity and they saw to it that the Constitution protected our right to use our property as we please, provided we do not harm the rights of others....

Leter to the Editor~by Doug McKee of The Calaveras Business Coalition

"May 28, 2010...Letter to the Editor: The Calaveras Business Coalition (CBC) is comprised of local business leaders, business owners and private citizens who are concerned about the direction of Calaveras County. We believe that an un-friendly business environment has been created and has significantly contributed to the decline in our economy, unemployment higher than our neighboring counties and a serious decrease in emergency services. The CBC has broad-based support and includes over 60 individual donors.....

Taxpayers Urge Protecting Property Rights~by Al Segalla

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/26/2010 07:45 AM
"The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association (CCTA) continues to urge support for Alternative D in the General Plan Update process. In addition, the group wants property owners to be notified in writing when the county seeks to change their land use designation, according to Al Segalla, CCTA President. He said his group will continue to seek public support for General Plan property rights protection. He commented on several positive features of taxpayer supported Alternative D: ...

Letter to the Editor~by Bill Senger

"Editor, Last week a mean-spirited voter mailer was sent to the residents of Arnold. Clearly, one of the candidates for supervisor of District 3 considers the voters in this county to be moronic rubes with IQs below room temperature. This I find offensive. I'm not concerned about the effect this will have on Merita Callaway's campaign. She has taken the high road and continues to talk about issues of importance to the residents of the county. Meanwhile, Bill McManus and his minions in the Calaveras Business Council are frantically slinging mud with their chicken-little sound bites of paranoid delusions and worn-out conspiracy theories. If profanity is....

OPEN LETTER TO CALAVERAS BOARD OF SUPERVISORS May 24, 2010

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/24/2010 08:00 AM
Subject: General Plan Update

"Dear Supervisors:

Your choice of the Mintier-Harnish alternative B/C does not appear to reflect the choice of your constituents as claimed by the consultants. The "visioning workshops" that I attended were under represented by voters and property owners and dominated by the consultants, facilitators and outside interest groups who packed the workshops to effect outcomes suiting their purpose, namely UN Agenda 21 smart growth. Conversely, Alternative D was the clear choice of the citizens at the well attended April 20 joint session ....

Letter to the Editor~by Sharon Romano

Reading the local papers and watching allegations flying around, you’d think we lived in the DC Beltway instead of Calaveras County. What has happened to candidates letting the voters know what they stand for and what they are going to do if elected rather than hurling accusations, half truths and out right lies about their opponents? This is a critical time for voters of Calaveras County. We are going to decide who is going to head four important functions of our local government – the Treasurer-Tax Collector, the Auditor-Controller, the Assessor, and the Clerk-Recorder. In addition, we are going to decide on a new Sheriff and will be voting for Supervisors in districts three and five. ....
