"Calaveras County Cannabis Wars...The stage is set... The recession hit Calaveras hard in 2009. Budgets were again slashed, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) suffered. Among other cuts, all extra-hire deputies were released and one full time deputy position was laid off. Cutting from the top, Sheriff Dennis Downum released Gary Kuntz, a 25 year veteran and Lieutenant with the CCSO. Soon afterwards and with the backing of Supervisor Steve Wilensky, a medical marijuana supporter and Downum nemesis, Kuntz soon announced his candidacy for Sheriff. As Kuntz is an affable, well known, and respected, deputy in our county, the race immediately promised to be a serious contest.....

Editor: "I am concerned about the future of Calaveras County. I believe, but am not certain, that Orange is the only County in California to declare bankruptcy. It may surprise some to learn that the Orange County Employees Association (OCEA) provided both guidance and financial support to survive that experience. Calaveras County doesn’t have an OCEA. Orange went under because the spending exceeded income and the economy tanked all at the same time. Sound familiar ? Recently, our economy has been in trouble..., no question ! That leaves the balance between revenue and expenses. It is likely that the costs for providing a decent sheriff’s office, road maintenance, communications, snow removal, etcetera, will be higher in the future. Costs tend to go up.....

Dear Editor,
"As the recently retired County Assessor, I am naturally interested in the upcoming election. During my 30-plus years in the Assessor’s Office, 10 as Assessor, I have gained considerable knowledge as to what type of a person it takes to successfully lead the office. That person is Leslie Davis. I was able to retire last year with peace of mind knowing that my Assistant Assessor Leslie was more than qualified to take the reins....

| "The General Plan Town Hall Meeting...The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors went down a dark road Tuesday 4/20 and voted completely against the will of the people. Did they not have enough time to study Alternative D? All the other choices have serious shortcomings. They are embodiments of “Smart Growth” also known as “U.N. Agenda 21” with people stacked up in high-rises (high-density) and animals running free in proposed “open spaces” (vacated homes, ranches and farms?) (Google: Wildlands Project by Dr. Michael Coffman.) Alternative D maintains property rights and would be accepted by most taxpayers. So, why is it not on the table? ..... |

Dear Taxpayer, The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association has been working to encourage our Calaveras County General Plan and local government to better protect liberty and property rights for several years. It has been a frustrating and thankless job, but a necessary one, if there is to be a return to prosperity in our county. The county is going though a General Plan Update process and the public was given three alternatives to choose from - all hurtful to property rights....

| Editor: "What is wrong with the Calaveras General Plan Update process? I suspect that the San Andreas fault (pun intended) lies not with the county staff but with the planning profession and some self-enamored citizens who have an idealistic but impractical vision of forest primeval and grand vistas of bucolic wildlife, all under their wise supervision. Planners have degrees in planning and public administration, but is Agenda 21 the mantra of this profession? Think Smart Growth, New Urbanism, and total government control of your property.... |

| "Dear Editor, In reference to the Calaveras County General Plan Update, I think there are plenty of differing opinions on how the County should develop. Many of us seem to share the vision that it is possible and important to protect, preserve and restore our free society. This may be why our Constitution seems so important today. “Visioning”, as exercised in the CEQA process, seems to involve an emotional and motivating exercise whereby participants envision how other people’s property should be used or not used over time. ..... |

"In the course of my campaign for Auditor-Controller of Calaveras County, I have been investigation Government Waist in Calaveras County. During this time I came across information Regarding Coroner Kevin Raggio that I turned over to the press for investigation. I gave them what limited information I had, and told them that there was a possible story. As part of this investigation, I reviewed the mid year Calaveras County Financial Shortfall. | Letter to the Editor...The Pinetree has provided a very valuable service to the citizens of Calaveras County, an open forum to exchange ideas, vent our frustrations, and challenge our representatives. However, that service is being degraded by a small number of bloggers whose primary mission in life seems to be to personally attack those they don’t like or with whom they disagree. I am speaking specifically about the unwarranted and vicious personal attacks on Kevin Raggio in a current article on The Pinetree. Kevin is an elected official and, as such, needs to be held to the highest standards of his office and the people he was elected to serve. If there are allegations that he acted in an inappropriate or illegal manner, they should be fairly and completely investigated, and the results of those investigations made known. Until such time as he is charged with a crime or the allegations are proven, it is incumbent on us, as citizens of this community, to act in a civilized and responsible manner. It is reprehensible that, instead, a number of people find it necessary to personally vilify Mr. Raggio, based on rumor, conjecture, and their so-called “knowledge of the truth”.... |
