Letter to the Editor~by George Fry

WHEN WILL YOU EVER LEARN - CRAIG TURCO & JACK LYNCH? An Open Letter to the Residents of Angels Camp: This is not a personal attack on Jack Lynch and Craig Turco. It is about their performance while serving on the City Council. Jack Lynch and Craig Turco’s performance as City Council members is absolutely pitiful. First off, the Sierra Sentinel called Lynch, Turco, and Downey “the Three Amigos”. Many of the residents in Angels Camp are calling the three of them “the Three Stooges”. During the run up to Election Day in Angels Camp, many residents throughout Angels Camp were saying “I hope we are not going to get “LYNCHED” for another four years.” Well, the residents ......

An “Alternative View” of the CCOG Valley Springs Community Plan....The Board of Supervisors will soon choose a plan for Valley Springs that will affect development of that community for many years to come. The choice will likely be between the $250,000 job that CCOG and MyValleySprings.com penned, or the $0 document written by a local citizen’s committee put together by Supervisor Tofanelli. It should be noted that the BOS can adopt either, or neither of these plans......

Letter of Thanks~by Mark Campbell, Superintendent, Calaveras Unified School District

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 12/23/2010 07:43 AM
I want to extend my respect and appreciation to all who contributed to A Christmas to Remember, the annual donation drive that provides new clothing for students in the Calaveras Unified School District. This effort is done in conjunction with founding members in Amador County and the support of Jim Guidi and Hometown Radio as well as Patty Knobelauch was critical to our overall success. The Calaveras County fund-raising effort generated a bit over $13,000 this year, which was $5000 more than last year. Given the economic challenges we all face, to be able to generate this amount is a significant tribute to our community. Specific thanks goes out to Gene Weatherby of the ......

Dear Editor, Incoming Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor has said that Republicans now want to keep two significant parts of Obamacare: forcing insurance companies to offer coverage for people up to age 26 under their parents' policies, and forcing insurance companies to issue coverage for pre-existing conditions. It seems, repealing one bill and replacing it with a similar one is not repeal......

Is Angels Camp Safe? The budget of our city, Angels Camp, is in the red (reportedly $354,000.00). The city council's solution is to make a major cut to the ACFD fire department personnel (estimated at $28,800). This one cut will only make a 12% change in the budget debt. 12% for the city budget, but for the lives and safety of Angels Camp's citizens this change is 30%. 30% of the time we will not be covered by the fire department. This could mean the difference between life and death. Instead of the current part-time employed firemen, there will also be volunteers. These volunteers will need to have other full time jobs for their income and may not live in this community. Will they be available for your emergency? Who will come when you call 911? As an Angels Camp citizen I am afraid. ...

Leter to the Editor on Prop 19 ~by Steve Johnson

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/04/2010 08:54 AM
San Andreas, CA...Proposition 19 was a resounding victory for the legalization of marijuana. If you consider that in a non-presidential election year with a highly motivated right wing, nearly half of all California, nearly 3.5 million voters as of today's count, voted for legalization. Sacramento noticed. Those results should be staggering if you oppose legalization. This measure polled over 50% many different times in this campaign as well. For a barely funded proposition facing the consolidated opposition of state and federal government and their consortium of paid minions, not to mention the myriad of private "nanny in your bedroom" organizations, this was remarkable. Proposition 19 garnered mainstream and law enforcement support. The major political party in our state took an official "neutral" position on the measure, while its base voted for it. There can be no doubt that Proposition 19 was the foundation for a future victory. This was huge....

How Much Are County Employees Really Making? Estimates of County Employment Total Compensation Package ~By Darrell Wilburn

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/03/2010 11:08 AM
Arnold, CA...(Publishers Note...Local Resident and Retired Executive Darrell Wilburn and Others recently spent an enormous amount of time researching the true compensation level of our local county employees. They are asking for feedback from the county and citizens on this report. We we would like to thank them for their hard work on this. We have also included links to the original spreadsheets and other documents if you would like to dive into the numbers yourself)

The compensation was recently posted as $38,000/year at the Appraiser I level on the county web site. The report neglected to include benefits ranging from Medical and Dental, retirement contributions, paid time off up to 45 days per year, most of all retirement benefits guaranteed by the county. Any reasonable estimate must include the total amount of payout to an employee for the year of work. For the $38,000 reported, we found the compensation including just medical and retirement contribution is $60,000. When you add in the guaranteed retirement on the date of retirement, The county will payout a total of $2,310,779 to this employee over the retirement period using the built in COLA of 2%. AT 0% COLA the payout over the retirement period would be $1,675,000. This comes to an additional $67,000 on average for each year of service. Looking at it this way yields compensation of $121,000 that will be eventually paid out for that year of service...

We the voters in Calaveras County District 5 struggled with the stories posted and the comments made by our local news sources. That said it would be great if the news agencies that posted stories would review some basic journalism rules
Rule – 1

Get the facts right! Take time to make sure the facts are correct! Accept the fact that there are two stories and know the facts of BOTH stories before you post or print anything! Never make a deadline so important that you do not follow this rule!....

Calaveras Unified School District Fall Op Ed---2010~by Mark Campbell

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 10/27/2010 02:22 PM
San Andreas, CA...Do we focus on what we don’t have? Or, instead, do we choose to focus on what we are doing with what we do have and what we have control over? Yes, we could cite the sobering statistics that reflect our reality. We could point out that since 2008 we have lost 383 students and our revenue allocation from the state has dropped by $871 per student. We could illustrate the significant cuts to programs already implemented (layoffs of teachers and support staff, reduction in administration, elimination and reduction of some music and sports programs) and rail against the relative injustice of the cuts .....

Letter to The Editor on District 5 Race~by Marti Crane

Mr. Spellman came to Rancho just prior to the Copperopolis debate for an open Russ Thomas 'Town Hall' meeting (ask anything - no pre-arranged format). He saw how much we appreciated the one-on-one dialogue over local issues but failed to recognize that this event was called by Mr. Thomas. A debate is a politically charged arena and must have a planned format. Prior debates were called and organized by others, with rules all agreed to. For Mr. Spellman to accept the invitation and then think he has a right and the authority to derail the entire process is arrogant and delusional. This was not the first debate he cancelled or with which he claimed ‘conspiracy’.....
