Thank you Amador and Calaveras County Employers for Supporting The Arc

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/24/2014 12:11 PM
Amador and Calaveras County, Ca...The Arc of Amador and Calaveras is a non-profit, grass roots organization who works with intellectually and developmentally disabled adults. One of the areas we support our consumers in is supported employment. Currently we have 40 individuals working in the community at a variety of businesses throughout Amador and Calaveras Counties. They are hired through the business and receive minimum wage or above. Some of the perks of hiring someone through The Arc is that they are assigned a Job Coach, who helps them learn their job, at no cost to the employer. The job coach is always available throughout their employment term. We also pride ourselves on helping our folks develop a natural support system by building friendships with supervisors, co-workers and peers with similar jobs and needs. Of course the biggest reward is seeing how proud our folks are of their jobs; because of course where they work is the best place on earth. The Arc’s Supported Employment program could not be as successful if it was not for the businesses listed below. Without their willingness to hire, many people we support, may have never found the satisfaction and independence that comes from employment....

Foothill Conservancy Hosting Conservation Benefit Raft Trip August 10 on the American River

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/22/2014 01:42 PM
Jackson, Ca...On Sunday, August 10, Foothill Conservancy will hold a special one-day Mokelumne River conservation benefit raft trip on the South Fork of the American River. The trip is made possible due to the generosity of O.A.R.S. of Angels Camp, Calaveras County's family-owned and operated rafting outfitter. All proceeds from the trip will benefit Foothill Conservancy's Mokelumne River conservation efforts, which include not only securing Wild and Scenic protection for the river, but salmon and steelhead restoration, smart water planning for our region's future, and much more. The cost for this all-day adventure is $100 per person, more than a 25 percent discount from the regular Sunday price. Children and youth are welcome, minimum age 7 years. This is a great way to cool off on a hot summer day with family and friends while helping to protect and restore the beautiful river in your own back yard!

An opportunity to work: Community Support, How Local Businesses Support The Arc’s Work Crews

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/22/2014 01:46 PM
Amador County, Ca....Work crews at the Arc are paid group work opportunities in the community. All workers earn minimum wage and gain the skills needed to prepare them for individual job placements within the community. Crew members are held to a high standard. They must arrive to work on time, come dressed in crew attire, follow directions and follow safety rules and regulation set forth by each company we work for. In the past work crews use to use two vans and two trailers for recycling crews during the summer months. This year we purchased a 2004 Dodge Ram truck, eliminating the use of two vans down to one truck. This has been great for day programs as now they have the use of all their vans for classes and outings. Not only did the purchase of the truck increase the opportunity for campus outings in both Amador and Calaveras, but it saves the Arc money on a weekly basis. “We’re very proud of the new work crew truck,” said Director of Supported Employment Ileshia Knigge. “It bring cost saving strategy, keeps our day program vans clean, and consumers are very proud of it, it was a great decision and I’m happy our Executive Director and Board of Directors supported the purchase.”...

Call for Artists Kicks Off Major “River Reflections” Project

Posted by: Lea_Marie_C_Paar on 07/16/2014 05:04 PM
Amador County, Ca...Artists of all disciplines who live in Amador and Calaveras Counties are invited to submit qualifications and samples of work for an opportunity to participate in a project called “River Reflections.” The deadline to submit an application on line is midnight, August 22, 2014. Artists selected as Finalist Artists will be invited to create work inspired by the Mokelumne River, and they will have until December 1st to do so. Visual artists - in both two and three dimensional genres- dancers, musicians, composers, actors, literary, and video artists are encouraged to discover the application details at www.amadorarts.org. Last spring AmadorArts submitted the “River Reflections” project for a “Creative California Communities” Grant from the California Arts Council, a State Agency. Turns out, the local arts council has become one of 24 successful grantees out of 157 applicants statewide. AmadorArts, in partnership with Calaveras County Arts Council, the Foothill Conservancy and East Bay Municipal Utilities District, will spotlight the arts to increase awareness of the upper Mokelumne River, appreciation of its beauty and recreational opportunities, and the need for conservation. The inspired art, music, dance, and stories will be showcased in events scheduled in the first five months of 2015....
