To Appeal Or Not To Appeal...That Was The Question...Or Was It? Give me a Double Variance on the Rocks Please! ~By John Hamilton (Updated With Official Video)

Posted by: thepinetree on 09/02/2008 09:32 AM
San Andreas, CA...The Historic Murphys Hotel's new signage was back before the board this morning..or was it? It was an interesting discussion to say the least. Supervisor Tryon wanted the Board to review the planning commission's decision to allow the replacement of the dying tree and existing sign holder with a new sign pole and neon sign very similar in appearance to the existing sign with a small adult beverage glass added to the top of it. This sign is a recreation of the sign that adorned the hotel in the 1940's. Was it an appeal? Could Supervisor Tryon Vote on it our would he have to recuse himself? Could he vote today but not later? What exactly were they voting on? Would a formal appeal have to be filed? Would Public Works permit the sign anyway? Does the Hotel have an encroachment permit? Does it apply to this existing non-conforming use? Does it need to be noticed?...

Should Murphys be a Neon Free Zone? The BOS Will Decide at Tuesday's Meeting

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 09/01/2008 08:59 PM
San Andreas, CA....The BOS meet tomorrow, September 2nd for their regular weekly meeting. An Addendum has been added to the meeting. Since the Planning Commission's approval of Murphys Hotel neon sign was appealed, the Board will now weigh on the matter. To be decided is the fate of the proposed neon sign for Murphys Hotel, but the larger question is...should Murphys be a neon-free town and would the approval of one albeit attractive neon sign, be precedent setting of approval for neons sprouting up all over Murphys. Some of the other agenda items being discussed will be a Resolution Item to acknowledge September 2008 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Calaveras County; A Minute authorizing Board Chair to sign a letter of support for a ecosystems services market to support the economy; Resolution Item authorizing additions, deletions and changes to County Fees, effective October 1st, 2008; Fairway Village Subdivision road improvements will be discussed; Big Trees Estates Subdivision final map will also be discussed; At 10:30am, there will be a Study Session regarding Parks and Recreation Commission, Proposition 40 per capita grant projects. Full agenda enclosed for your viewing pleasure.

On Scene West Point Fire Observations ~By John Hamilton Updated with Video & Photos

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 09/01/2008 05:47 PM
West Point, CA...UPDATE as of 6:20pm...Kim and I and are on scene now at the West Point fire. Winton Road Remains closed. Smoke output appears to have diminished. Air traffic still remains heavy. It appears that some residents are being allowed back into their homes. CAL Fire is stating no containment as of yet. More updates to come by Hanna and ourselves. UPDATE #1 7:05pm....Just spoke with Lisa Williams at CAL Fire, the fire is not yet contained but it appears they have the upper hand on it. No homes have been damaged per Lisa, also still remains at 100 acres in size. More to come.. UPDATE #2 7:10pm...We are on scene now near the fire. The fire apparently started down a ridge then climbed to the top of a ridge off of Valentine Hill Drive. One home that was affected, was the home of Frank and Janice Lowry. There home was doused with retardant, and due to quick thinking on their part and their neighbors, using tractors and a loader, they quickly cleared the area around their home. The fire burned within 100 feet of their residence...

"Billie Hammer" The Last Sheepherder of Calaveras County!

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/29/2008 12:09 AM
San Andreas, CA...We thought we would run this lovely story for you again that we ran back in August.....We had the extreme pleasure of meeting Billie and Mike Hammer, of San Andreas early one morning this week, to find out what sheep herding is all about. If you saw the movie "Babe", everything will seem familiar to you except the pig. Billie Hammer is the last known free-range sheepherder of Calaveras County. She has goats or sheep for over forty years. We even had the pleasure of meeting retired Sheep Show Dog, Coy. Coy is a $10,000 trained competition sheep herding dog, just like in the movie "Babe." Billie mentioned that her job would be impossible without the help of Coy each morning. Coy can round the sheep up, make them turn left, turn right and hardest of all, park them...
