CHP San Andreas To Host Teen Driving Class On May 9th

San Andreas, CA – The leading cause of death for Americans 15-20 years old is motor vehicle collisions, (According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the CHP’s goal is to reduce the death rate among teenagers as the result of these collisions. In order to address this alarming trend, the CHP developed a program called Start Smart. Start Smart is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers understand the critical responsibilities of driving and to understand that accidents do happen, but collisions are 100 percent preventable.

Charlene Adell DeRivi, May 6, 1940 - April 8, 2017

Valley Springs, CA...Charlene Adell DeRivi, Born in Phoenix Arizona May 6, 1940 to Sterling and Lorene White. Charlene passed away April 8, 2017 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton, CA. at the age of 76 years. Her family moved to Bakersfield where she spent most of early life. While working as the Manager of Fred Harvey's Restaurant, she met her husband, Richard DeRivi. They were married for 46 years. Charlene, along with her husband loved to fish, camp and travel. She formed a group of sibling women 'On the road again gang' and traveled all over the United States using the back roads to see real life, missing only two states. She loved children and often took them camping, related or not, it did not matter. As a result, they all called her Aunt Charlene and still do to this day. She also moved around the States as her husband was transferred and traveled with him overseas.

San Andreas, CA...The 49th Annual Calaveras County Spelling Bee saw some intense spelling competition on Thursday, April 6 at the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks gymnasium. Fifty students competed from the following schools: Avery Middle School, Bret Harte High School, Calaveras High School, Christian Family Learning Center, Copperopolis Elementary, Jenny Lind Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, San Andreas Elementary, Toyon Middle School, Valley Springs Elementary

Art's Council's Art Beats for Veterans

San Andreas, CA...The first Sunday in April was a fine day for creating art behind the gallery for our salute to Calaveras County Veterans and their families. Laundry appeared on the staircase behind the Calaveras County Museum, and volunteer Robert Mierzwak brought a beautiful 48-star flag that made the scene absolutely striking. Models in costumes posed while painters sketched and painted and photographers clicked away (see some of the work our Member Artist of the Month, Susan Conner, created, below).

Saturday’s Native Plant Sale a Success

San Andreas, CA...Just before a large rainstorm blew in Saturday, nearly 100 people attended the fourth-annual Native Plant Sale at the Calaveras County Water District’s Headquarters. The event took place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 8, and was organized by the the Sierra Foothills Chapter of the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) in partnership with CCWD. Attendees chose from a wide variety of beautiful, healthy native plants, including trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, grasses, bulbs and succulents.

Mountain Ranch, CA...What is the Stop, Drop & Mud? This race is designed to be a fitness challenge, pitting First Responders (Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement) and Military against the general public.  Show us what you’ve got! We are proud to be bringing a mud run to Mountain Ranch this year — the first of its kind!  We are planning on approximately 16 obstacles along the route that will range from fire fighter skills to strength and endurance tests. Participants will start and finish at the Mountain Ranch Park in the heart of Mountain Ranch.  All participants will receive a 2017 Stop, Drop & Mud shirt.

K.W. Emerson To Begin Construction Of Retaining Walls On Hwy 4 Near Big Trees

Arnold, CA...The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is preparing to begin a project that will install retaining walls along State Route 4 (SR-4) near Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The project will install retaining walls for sediment control, improve culverts and drainage, and re-construct roadside shoulders along a half-mile segment of SR-4, just west of the entrance to Big Trees State Park. Work is scheduled to begin during the week of April 16, 2017 and be completed in Fall 2017. One-way traffic control will be used and motorists should expect 10-20 minute delays. Work is scheduled to be done mostly in the day. This $7.3 million project has been awarded to K.W. Emerson, Inc. from San Andreas.
