Sacramento, CA...Today, the Education Coalition, comprised of the nine statewide K-12 education associations that work closely to advocate for the six million students in California’s public schools and colleges, urged California’s lawmakers to adopt a funding solution to the COVID-19-related budget crisis in the June budget. The group said that without adequate funding, schools cannot open on time safely.

Angels Camp, CA...The Bret Harte Union High School District Governing Board want to extend our appreciation to the caring community members and organizations for donations which allowed us to purchase yard signs for each of our graduating seniors. Deepest thanks go to the Grad Night Foundation of Calaveras County, Supervisor Merita Callaway, Joanne and Casey Elliott, Murphys Business Association, Donna and Robert Hester, Gloria and Glenn Carrillo, and the men and womens' chapters of the Ebbetts Pass Moose Lodge. New Principal Named for Hazel Fischer Elementary School

Arnold, CA...Dr. Raymond Fausel was appointed by the Vallecito Union School District Governing Board as Principal for Hazel Fischer Elementary School in Arnold, California for the 2020/21 school year. Dr. Fausel brings a range of experience in diverse roles as Director of Teaching and Learning at Del Mar Pines Elementary School in San Diego, California. He was awarded a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University. Dr. Fausel also holds a masters degree in Digital Teaching and Learning and will bring strength to the District’s technology integration with the goal to continue to move student achievement forward.

Spending Per Pupil Increased for Sixth Consecutive Year

Washington, DC...The amount spent per pupil for public elementary and secondary education (pre-K through 12th grade) for all 50 states and the District of Columbia increased by 3.4% to $12,612 per pupil during the 2018 fiscal year, compared to $12,201 per pupil in 2017, according to new tables released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.  The increase in spending was due in part to an overall increase in revenue. In 2018, public elementary and secondary schools received $720.9 billion from all revenue sources, up 3.8% from $694.3 billion in 2017.

Columbia College Presents It's 2020 Graduating Class

Columbia, CA...Graduation is one of the most important milestone in the academic journey of students. The entire campus community looks forward to the commencement ceremony with family and friends of the graduating class. Because of the extraordinary circumstances due to the COVID 19 pandemic, Columbia College cancelled its 51st Commencement Ceremony following the guidelines issued by the California Department of Public Health. Each and every student graduating this year will have the opportunity to return to the campus and walk formally with the class of 2021 next Spring. Although this graduating class will not get to walk in the traditional graduation ceremony, the college’s Graduation Committee has created packages for each graduating student to include a congratulatory letter from the college president - Dr. Santanu Bandyopadhyay, a graduation cap, tassel, cords and/or sashes for special program involvement, leadership, and/or high GPAs.

Columbia College Graduates Fire Academy Students

Columbia, CA...Columbia College’s Fire Academy would like to announce the graduation and Certificates of Completion to the successful students of the Fire Technology Program. The certificates are awarded based on the student’s successful completion of the academic and manipulative training as mandated for a California Firefighter 1 Certification. The students must still complete six months of full-time or one year of part-time field experience before applying to the state for Firefighter I Certification. “Some of the graduates will apply or continue with reserve, intern, and volunteer in positions at local fire departments since entering the academy” said Chief Shane Warner, Columbia College Fire Technology Program Coordinator/Instructor. “Some of the students have already applied through a standard application process for seasonal employment with CAL Fire, Forest Service, and local fire agencies” said Instructor Andy VanHoogmoed.

Heavy Fire Equipment Operator Training Underway on New Hogan Vegetation Management Plan

San Andreas, CA...Training for CAL FIRE Heavy Equipment Operators began yesterday within the 500 acre New Hogan VMP (Calaveras County) and will continue through May 8th. This feild training is essential for the operators and also will provided need community protection to the community of Rancho Calaveras.. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit is completing hazardous fuel reduction in cooperation with the CAL FIRE Training Center in the vicinity of Highway 26 and Hogan Dam Road within the community of Rancho Calaveras in Calaveras County from April 21st to May 8th, 2020.
