Sacramento, CA...In his 2014-15 State Budget released last week, Governor Brown proposed the complete elimination of funding for the Agricultural Education Incentive Grant, which supports high quality Agricultural Education standards in our public schools. This grant program is designed to provide matching funds for districts who commit to meeting state-approved program standards in Ag Education, including classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience projects, and leadership training through the Future Farmers of America (FFA) student organization....

San Andreas – Calaveras County professionals, parents, and interested community members will have a rare local opportunity to learn from a leading authority on childhood brain development this February. Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D, Senior Fellow of the Child Trauma Academy, a not-for-profit organization based in Houston, TX, and adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Finberg School of Medicine, will present a day-long workshop entitled “Understanding Childhood Trauma-Creating a Trauma-Informed Community,” Friday, February 21, 2014, 8:15 am – 4:15 pm at the San Andreas Community Town Hall, 24 Church Street in San Andreas. CUSD Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Enrollment Packets Available February 7th.

San Andreas, CA....Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program. (The first year being Transitional Kindergarten and the second year a more traditional Kindergarten program.) Students may enroll in a Transitional Kindergarten program if they are five years old on September 2 through December 2. Children must be five years old prior to September 2 to enroll in traditional Kindergarten. Parents and guardians may optionally enroll their age-eligible child in a Transitional Kindergarten program. Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten enrollment packets will be available at Calaveras Unified School District elementary schools beginning February 7, 2014 . The deadline for returning the packets is March 7, 2014. If you have any questions, please call the school....

January is National Mentoring Month: Be Someone Who Matters to Someone Who Matters

Angels Camp, CA...his January marks the 13th annual National Mentoring Month, a campaign aimed at expanding quality mentoring programs and connecting more of our community’s young people with caring adults. Here in Calaveras County, the Calaveras County Office of Education administers two youth mentoring programs: the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, which supports 25-30 matches at a time between children and caring adult friends; and the FNL Mentoring Program, which connects up to 30 middle school students with high school mentors each year. Both the Calaveras County Board of Education and the Board of Supervisors annually recognize National Mentoring Month and express their gratitude for our community’s volunteer mentors....
