02/29/2020 - Silent Movie Night "The Thief of Baghdad" At Ironstone Vineyards
Murphys, CA...The Thief of Bagdad is a 1924 American silent swashbuckler film directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Douglas Fairbanks, and written by Achmed Abdullah and Lotta Woods. Freely adapted from One Thousand and One Nights, it tells the story of a thief who falls in love with the daughter of the Caliph of Baghdad. The Thief of Bagdad is now widely considered one of the great silent films and Fairbanks's greatest work.

Fairbanks biographer Jeffrey Vance writes, "An epic romantic fantasy-adventure inspired by several of the Arabian Nights tales, The Thief of Bagdad is the greatest artistic triumph of Fairbanks's career. The superb visual design, spectacle, imaginative splendor, and visual effects, along with his bravura performance (leading a cast of literally thousands), all contribute to making this his masterpiece."

Featuring Dave Moreno on the Alhambra Pipe Organ.

Angels Camp, CA...JOIN US IN THE Carriage House at the Museum, 1:30 p.m. refreshments, 2 - 3 p.m. lecture. The Angels Camp Museum Foundation invites you to join us for this very special lecture on Big Trees History by Joan Allday who is the historian and a docent for Big Trees State Park

Joan grew up in southern California and attended the University of California at Long Beach where she met her husband. After retiring from the Thousand Oaks School District she and her husband decided to move to the Sierras because of their love for backpacking and camping. Joan has also had a lifelong passion for California history and credits her grandmother for planting the “seed of historical curiosity in” her.

After moving to Arnold in 2011 Joan became immersed in Calaveras Big Trees State Park as a docent. Two years later, she was a director on the Association’s Board and is currently the Vice-President. Besides chairing events for the park, she is the park’s historian conducting oral interviews and overseeing the Park’s annual Discovery Day, held in July. Discovery Day introduces historical knowledge to park visitors through docent interpretation.

Joan always looks forward to meeting more people with a historical connection to Big Trees State Park. “Their stories are always fascinating!”

“Sugaray” Rayford is an American Soul blues singer and songwriter. He has released Six albums to date and was nominated for two Blues Music Awards in 2019 – Soul Blues Male Artist and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. HE WON SOUL BLUES MALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR! His last album is nominated for a 2019 Grammy.

When Sugaray belts out a song, you not only hear it, you feel it. The excitement in the room is palpable when he takes the stage; he is a superb vocalist and entertainer. His dynamic voice is large just like the man. With his old school vocal style, echoes of Muddy Waters, Otis Redding and Teddy Pendergrass can be heard. At 6’5” he is a big man, but he moves with grace and energy. His fluid dance steps will remind you of the Legendary James Brown.

Texas born Caron “Sugaray” Rayford began his musical career at the age of 7 singing & playing drums in church, and his gospel influence can be heard and felt in his music. Rayford’s phrasing is intimate and conversational and the soulful gravel in his voice hints at his firsthand experience with hardship.
