FEMA Fire Management Assistance Granted for the SQF Complex |

Oakland, CA...The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of California in combating the SQF Complex burning in Tulare County. On Sept. 13, 2020, the state of California submitted a request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) for the SQF Complex. At the time of the request, the fire threatened approximately 1,900 homes in the communities of Sequoia Crest, Camp Nelson, Springville, and Ponderosa. The fire also threatened a power plant, an above-ground power distribution center, commercial timber resources, the Mountain Home State Demonstration Forest, and timber and grazing lands for the Thule Indian Reservation.

Compton, CA...Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting of two LASD deputies. The incident was reported Saturday, September 12, 2020, at approximately 6:58 p.m., at the MLK Transit Center in Compton. A lone gunman ambushed two of our deputies. The suspect approached the vehicle from behind and fired several rounds from his firearm at the deputies, striking them. The deputies sustained critical injuries. The suspect is described as a male Black 28-30 years-old, wearing dark clothing.

FBI Tip Leads to Sonora Woman’s Arrest for Solicitation to Commit Murder. |

Sonora, CA...Friday evening, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Detectives, with the assistance of the patrol division, arrested 38-year-old Heidi Butler of Sonora for Solicitation to commit murder. Our office was contacted recently by the FBI regarding information pertaining to murder for hire involving Heidi. The tip, and subsequent investigation, led to a search warrant of Heidi’s home. Heidi was arrested shortly there after.

Search and Rescue Conducts Swift Water Training |

San Andreas, CA...On September 12th, 2020, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) Team conducted their annual swift water rescue training. The training was held on the North Fork of the Stanislaus River. The team trained on a variety of skills including defensive swimming, throw bag rescue, accessing and treating victims in the water, and many other specialized skillsets related to waterborne rescues.

San Andreas, CA...On August 31st, 2020, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Unit served search warrants at two unrelated illegal marijuana cultivation sites in the 600 block of Smitty Lane in West Point and the 4900 block of Buckboard Lane in Campo Seco. Deputies seized a combined total of 391 growing marijuana plants with an estimated value exceeding $273,000. Additionally, at these sites, Deputies seized 0.7 grams of methamphetamine, several ounces of processed marijuana, and three firearms.

Oroville, CA...North Zone: From Lee Summit to Claremont Peak, the fire remains in the current footprint. Crews are engaged with tactical firing operations near Lookout Rock and reinforcing structure protection in the Bucks Lake, Haskins, and Highlands areas. Crews are prepping existing roads and building dozer lines to tie in with old fire scars and contingency lines from the Camp Fire. This will eventually tie in with Highway 70 north of Elephant Butte.

Forest Service Temporarily Closes All National Forests in California |

Vallejo, CA...Due to unprecedented and historic fire conditions throughout the state, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of an additional ten National Forests, meaning all eighteen National Forests in California are now closed. The closure of the additional ten forests will be effective at 5:00 pm today. These additional forests include the Eldorado National Forest, Klamath National Forest, Lassen National Forest, Mendocino National Forest, Modoc National Forest, Six Rivers National Forest, Plumas National Forest, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. This decision will be re-evaluated daily as conditions change.
