Multi-Agency Emergency Exercise April 12 in Valley Springs and Jenny Lind

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/03/2014 02:43 PM
Valley Spring, CA ...More than 100 volunteers and local emergency responders will take part in the third Annual Calaveras Emergency Exercise on Saturday, 12 April in the Valley Springs/Jenny Lind area. This exercise will test the preparedness and response of local, regional and state agencies should a real crisis occur that has the potential to overwhelm local emergency responders. The event, staged by the cooperative efforts of CALFIRE-TCU, Calaveras Consolidated Fire and Calaveras Office of Emergency Services, will focus on response plans for an actual disaster. One that would trigger a sudden influx of injured persons, media, concerned community members and test the compatibility of different public agencies (Sheriff, Fire, CHP) to not only work and communicate with each other but work and communicate with private and nongovernment organizations like the America Legion Ambulance, PG&E, Red Cross and the Calaveras Emergency Response Teams,

April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month- CHP Crackdown on Handheld Cell Phone Use

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/02/2014 10:53 PM
Sacramento, CA...In an effort to save lives and eliminate dangerous behind-the-wheel distractions like talking, texting, or browsing on a cell phone, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), California Highway Patrol (CHP), and more than 200 law enforcement agencies across the state today announced high visibility enforcement operations during April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. “Catastrophic crashes can happen in a split second,” said Brian Kelly, Secretary of the California State Transportation Agency. “No text or phone call is worth that risk.” Four dates, April 3, 8, 17, and 22, have been earmarked for special statewide enforcement for all the allied law enforcement agencies. Individual agencies will be looking for mobile device offenders in their areas on additional days throughout the month. The increased enforcement aims to persuade drivers to recognize the dangers of distracted driving and reduce the number of people impacted by this perilous behavior. The “It’s Not Worth It!” theme emphasizes that a phone call or text isn’t worth a hefty fine or a collision...

Sheriff Gary Kuntz Statement of Candidacy 2014: Why I’m Running

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/02/2014 10:02 PM
San Andreas, CA ... When I ran for Sheriff four years ago, law enforcement in Calaveras County faced some real challenges. I believed then that my 24-year career in Calaveras County law enforcement made me the best candidate to confront those challenges, and I asked for your vote. I sincerely appreciate the trust placed in me by the voters. Back then I pledged to fight for public safety. I pledged to put emphasis back on community policing. I pledged to help get the jail project back on track, and to restore trust in the Sheriff’s office. Today, working together, we have made real progress on all these fronts. Despite a widely dispersed County population and an ongoing budget crisis, with the support of the Board of Supervisors we were able to increase the number of deputies on patrol and decrease Average Response Times. The Average Response Time for all calls is now 36 ¾ minutes, down around 4 ½ minutes, or 11%. For emergency calls, the Average Response Time is now around 19 minutes, down 1 ¾ minutes, or 8%. Average Response Times are heading in the right direction. Overall, general crime prevention activity has greatly increased. In 2010, the year before I took office, the number of car stops was 1106. In 2013 car stops were up over 300% to 3116. Checks on commercial buildings and businesses are also up significantly, going from 21 in 2010 to 495 in 2013. Overall, violent crime is down about 17% since 2011.
