Fair Season Rolls Into High Gear at Preview Meeting ~By John Hamilton

Frogtown, USA....At a recent Fair preview combined meeting of the Fair Board and the Friends of the Fair it was apparent that Calaveras County Fair and Frog Jubilee Season is now in high gear. All of the organizing committees responsible for different areas of the fair were on hand to lay our their plans for this year. It looks like the transition from a State subsidized operation to a fully community and profit funded fair is complete and no doubt will become a model for other fairs as they transition to a self funded model as well. Not only is the fair now profitable it seems everyone involved is having a good time getting ready for our area's week in the national spotlight that with that little book by Mark Twain so many years ago...

Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee is rooted deep in tradition. That is one of the things that makes the Fair so special. The Fair also has a traditional formula for entertainment, Miss Calaveras, Saddle Queen, Rodeo Events, Country Music Headline Concert (The Farm), Frog Jump and the Destruction Derby. The good news for fair-goers is that the Fair will feature all of those events and more!

Atman Metal Arts Bringing Visionary Metal Art and Sculpture Pieces to Murphys

Murphys, CA...One of the newest businesses to open up is Atman Metal Arts. Alex Atman creates a 3 D illusion on flat metal, through the use of grinding patterns and light. His work isfeatured at Atman Metal Arts in Murphys, along with sculpture from Brad Stark and others. In works that have to be experienced in person to truly be appreciated we would encourage all of you to make a pilgrimage to the gallery at 466 Main. Railtown 1897 Offers Behind-the-Scenes Shop Tours On Tuesday Mornings Beginning March 26

Jamestown, CA...Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SHP) will now offer special, behind-the-scenes Shop Tours on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon on an ongoing basis beginning March 26, 2013. Interested visitors will be treated to an up-close and personal view of routine maintenance and specialized work happening on current projects in the historic Roundhouse as well as in the Tri-Dam shop (a Cold War-era machine shop used to repair, replace or service parts for operating equipment, cars, steam and diesel locomotives). Keep in mind, parts for steam engines -- and sometimes vintage diesel locomotives -- cannot be purchased and must be manufactured on-site making Railtown 1897 SHP one of the most accessible places around to watch this specialized work being performed. Along with educating visitors about our fascinating rail history, maintaining and repairing steam engines and diesels is an important part of the mission of Railtown 1897 SHP....

Calaveras Visitors Bureau Taps Giants Baseball VP of Guest Services for Customer Service Workshop at Ironstone

Angels Camp, CA..To help kick-off the summer tourism season, the Calaveras Visitors Bureau (CVB) will host a luncheon featuring guest speaker Rick Mears, VP of Guest Services for the San Francisco Giants, on May 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ironstone Vineyards. Mears, who is entering his 15th season with the Giants (the 2010 and 2012 World Series Champions), will discuss the key elements for providing a great customer service experience by touching on personal anecdotes and examples from his 35 years in the guest services business. Currently, he is responsible for all ushers, ticket takers, and luxury suite and club level staff on game days at AT&T Park. He also trains many of the other game day staff working in and around the ballpark in their guest related duties....

“The Autism Chronicles” Sheds Light On Growing Concern Of Parents

Murphys, CA...With the recent headline news that U.S. children are being diagnosed with some form of autism at a record rate of 1 in 50, the Mind Matters Clinic’s presentation of “The Autism Chronicles” takes on increased significance. The hour-long play, that is both poignant and humorous, endeavors to provide insight into what dealing with autism is like and what a group of dedicated people is doing to ease the burdens. As part of Autism Awareness Month, there will be three performances, one in each of the counties the clinic serves. The first will be in the Black Bart Playhouse, in Murphys on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday, April 7, 2 p.m. performance in the Sonora High School Auditorium, and concluding with a Sunday, April 14, 2 p.m. presentation in the Sutter Creek Theater....

Spectacular mountain scenery and huge amounts of snow, minus the below zero temps you have to battle in other parts of the country. And right in Calaveras County’s backyard along the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway, are some of the state’s best trails. The Calaveras Visitors Bureau recently talked to Sandy Price of Bear Valley Snowmobile to find out how people can take advantage of this family-friendly winter sport and what makes the Ebbetts Pass area so unique for snowmobiling. Dance Show March 23rd to Benefit the Creativity Center

San Andreas, CA...Bret Harte Senior Nicole Huddy’s prepares for her upcoming Senior Project of a dance show. The performance will take place on Saturday March 23rd at the San Andreas Metropolitan. Doors open at 5 o’clock and the show will start at 5:30. The performance is free but any donation is accepted at the door. The proceeds from the show are going to be donated back to the Creativity Center. Huddy and dancers have been preparing for the show every Saturday for the past six weeks. The idea behind the project was to introduce and teach every style of dance to the young artists as an outreach. Please come and support the project and enjoy a wonderful show.
