PAWS Vegetation Management Program (VMP) Control Burn on June 7th & 8th
San Andreas, CA...California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit will be completing a hazardous fuel reduction burn near the intersection of Highway 49 and Pool Station Road adjacent to the community of San Andreas in Calaveras County on June 7th and 8th 2022.

The two burn units included in the PAWS VMP Treatment Area encompass approximately 125 acres of annual grasses, oak woodland, and scattered chaparral species. The landowner, The Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), utilizes areas adjacent to the identified burn units as a sanctuary for abused, injured, and abandoned captive wildlife. The burn unit will effectively create a defensible area of reduced vegetation between Highway 12 and the community of San Andreas alleviating the threat from damaging wildfire to the wildlife sanctuary, as well as the residential subdivisions adjacent to the VMP. Reduction of noxious weeds including Yellow Starthistle, as well as training on live fire utilizing various techniques will be secondary benefits of the PAWS VMP Burn.

The burn is anticipated to begin between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and is expected to last 6 to 8 hours. The public may see smoke or fire during these times near the Highway 49, Pool Station Road intersection, and the community of San Andreas.

Control lines and established roadways will be used to prevent the spread of fire from areas outside the burn unit. Firefighters will remain at scene until all hotspots are out.

Cooperating agencies assisting CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit with the burn include, San Andreas Fire Protection District, and Calaveras County Air Pollution Control District.
