Middleton's has been part of the Angels Camp Community Since 1955!

Family owned and operated since 1955, Middleton’s Mark Twain Center, Inc. was originally Calaveras Mercantile bought by Hank and Matilda Middleton in 1955. Starting as a furniture, feed, fabric, and appliance business in the original 1500-sq-ft location proved to not meet the needs of the community. Hank and Mat were now raising their young family, and seeing the potential growth and needs of Calaveras County, purchased acres of land in 1960 just on the edge of town. They built and developed the first shopping center in the county. Hank anchored his 27,000 sq. ft. furniture, appliance, hardware, and gift shop with a local bank and grocery store.

Fast forward to 1977 with youngest son Bob graduating college with a BS in Business. Taking over the family business, Bob also saw the needs of the community he was raised in and joined a National Buying Group for Middleton’s in 1981. Being a member of BrandSource gives Middleton’s the ability to serve their customers with name brand furniture, mattresses, appliances, and televisions such as La–Z–Boy, Ashley, Simmons, Tempur–Pedic, GE, Electrolux, Speed Queen, Frigidaire, Samsung TVs and also Hoover and Simplicity vacuums at competitive prices with the bonus of expert customer service that an independent retailer can offer.

Here it is, 2012, and Middleton’s Mark Twain Center still boasts a local bank, trophy shop, cellular phone store, grocery store, Middleton’s Gold Crown Hallmark shop, and their BrandSource Furniture, Appliance, and TV store. This 3rd Generation Family Business is a viable part of the entire community with involvement in schools, service clubs, and scholarships to high schools, and belongs to the local business association. Middleton’s was also chosen Business of the Year in 2010 by the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce.

After over 57 years in business, Middleton’s wants to invite all new and old customers to check out all that we offer for your household needs in the furniture, appliance, mattress, and TV department.

About Calaveras County from the Chamber...

Life in Calaveras County is good. It is a privilege residents regard with heartfelt pride and commitment.

With a land area of 1,036 square miles (652,920 acres) and a population of 40,554 (2000 Census), there are approximately 16 acres of land for every resident. From near sea level with rolling foothills dotted with century old oaks to the spectacular Sierra crest in the west topping 8,000 feet, Mother Nature’s beauty abounds.

With that comes a wide range of recreational opportunities and a thriving tourism industry, alongside a burgeoning business community. Excellent Schools and Health Care. Quality of life. Community. History. This is Calaveras County.

Location
Calaveras County is situated in the heart of California’s Gold Country, nestled between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains – approximately one hour from the Central Valley, two hours from Sacramento and three hours from the Bay Area. Calaveras is bordered by Amador, Tuolumne and Alpine counties and by the Mokelumne River to the north and the Stanislaus River to the south.

Climate
The average low ranges from 40 degrees in the lowlands to 20 degrees in the high country in the winter months. Average highs range from 80 to 90 degrees. Annual rainfall can range from 40-50 inches with average snowfall in the High Sierra up to 300 inches.

Attractions
The county features numerous attractions including Calaveras Big Trees State Park, 250,000 acres of national forest land in the Stanislaus National Forest, nearby Bear Valley Ski Area and an abundance of recreational venues including three public caverns, a myriad of museums depicting local and Gold Rush history, over 15 wineries, six public or semi-private golf courses and nine public lakes.

Activities range from mountain biking, camping, hiking, fishing, cave exploration and golfing to river rafting, kayaking, boating and water skiing in the warmer months and world-class downhill and cross country skiing in the winter.

The natural beauty of Calaveras County also attracts artists of every passion, supporting a bevy of art galleries, live music, craft fairs and theatrical events.

A yearly calendar of special events include Calaveras’ signature “Jumping Frog Jubilee,” inspired by Mark Twain’s first published classic, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Over the years, many events have gained popular momentum, becoming premier regional attractions in their own right.

History
Created in 1850, Calaveras County is one of California’s original 27 counties. Calaveras was awakened in 1848 by the California Gold Rush. The county’s heritage centers around the multitude of fortune seekers who came from around the world. Over 9 million ounces of gold were mined from its land.

The county became world-famous in 1865 with Mark Twain’s short story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. That history lives on in the many Gold Rush towns and in the people who settled here after the Gold Rush and started ranches, planted vineyards and remained for the exceptional quality of life.

Population
Calaveras County is one of California’s fastest growing counties. The county’s population in 1990 was 31,998 and in 2000 was recorded at 40,554, a rate increase of 26.7%, about twice the average state growth rate during this period of 13.8%.

Countywide population projections from the California State Dept. of Finance:
2005: 47,800
2010: 53,400
2015: 57,900
2020: 62,200
39% of the population is 25-54 years of age, 32% are 55 and older, 18% are age 0-14, and 10% from ages 15-24.

Visitor Services
Conveniently located on Highway 4 in the heart of the county on Main Street in downtown Angels Camp, the Calaveras Visitors Bureau is open daily for tourist and resident information. Newly built in 2000, the Visitors Bureau office has a landscaped rest area with picnic tables, clean public restrooms and a large porch with oak rocking chairs.

The Calaveras Visitors Bureau is a proactive non-profit organization devoted to providing comprehensive visitor services and marketing the county through the CVB’s Visitor Guide, press releases, media contacts, trade shows, web site and working together with the community, members, neighboring organizations and trade associations for the betterments of the tourism industry in Calaveras County.

08:00 PM - 10:00 PM Amy Helm- Grammy winning Americana, country, blues, gospel at the Sutter Creek Theatre Thursday 7/18
Amy Helm is the keeper of a musical legacy as well as a musician who has forged her own path. She is the daughter of The Band drummer Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus, but while she has honored her heritage, she has made her own kind of music.
Inspired by her parents, Helm began performing in bands around Manhattan as a teen. She joined her father’s band, The Barn Burners and they toured the country playing traditional blues music. As she gained confidence in her own art, she went on to form Ollabelle, a multi-genre, multi-instrumentalist folk group. They went on to participate in Alison Krauss’ National Great High Mountain tour. Helm toured and recorded with Ollabelle for 10 years and released three critically-acclaimed albums.
In 2004, Helm and her father built the Midnight Ramble Concerts at his home in Woodstock, New York. They featured artists like Emmylou Harris, Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello and others and from these rambles, Levon Helm recorded his first album in 25 years, Dirt Farmer, produced by Amy Helm and Larry Campbell. It won a Grammy in 2008 for Best Traditional Folk Album. In 2009, they recorded Electric Dirt which won the first-ever Grammy for Best Americana Album. Amy Helm was also part of Ramble at the Ryman, recorded at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. It won the 2012 Grammy for Best Americana Album. That was the year in which Levon Helm lost his battle with throat cancer.
Amy Helm released her first solo album, Didn’t it Rain, in 2015. It featured her father’s last recorded drum performances, as well as her Ollabelle bandmate, Byron Isaacs, and Little Feet keyboardist Bill Payne. In 2018, she released her most recent work, This Too Shall Light. She described her goal as “a circular sound, marked by streaks of Americana, country, blues and gospel and all kinds of four-part harmonies that can open a melody and close the loop of an octave.” While Helm is a prolific songwriter, the album has a diverse collection of songs from Rod Stewart’s “Mandolin Wind,” to Allen Toussaint’s “Freedom for the Stallion.” She has said that two songs are tributes to her father: “The Stones I Throw,” a song her father recorded with Levon and the Hawks in 1965 and “Gloryland” an acapella hymn passed down from father to daughter.
The historic Sutter Creek Theatre is an intimate 215 seat former silent film theatre with superb sound. Beer and wine at the venue, tickets and video at the web site www.suttercreektheatre.com
Tickets $35 advance / $41 day of show
