About the Native Daughters of the Golden West...

Founding of the Order of Native Daughters of the Golden West
By Grand Historian Bertha A. Briggs, Past Grand President 1953

The historic mining city of Jackson, Amador County, has the honor of being the birthplace of the Order of Native Daughters of the Golden West.

Pursuant to a call issued by Lilly O. Reichling, about twenty young women met in Pioneer Hall on September 11, 1886. Miss Reichling explained that the object of the meeting was to form an Order of California-born women to be known as the Native Daughters of the Golden West.

The Order was organized in Pioneer Hall, at a meeting held on September 25, 1886, when, by request, Judge Curtis Lindley presided, Miss Lilly O. Reichling acting as Secretary.

Chosen for the first Parlor of the Order was the distinctive name of Ursula (meaning "The Bear" - suggestive of courage and strength).

Tina L. Kane was named as the first President, and the charter list closed after thirty days with a membership of thirty-three. Charter Officers were installed March 7, 1887.

The first emblem chosen was the spotted fawn, which, however, was discarded for the more impressive emblems of Minerva, the Oriflamme, Sheaves of Wheat, and the mystic letters P.D.F.A.

Founding principles adopted were Love of Home, Devotion to the Flag of our Country, Veneration of the Pioneers of California, and an Abiding Faith in the Existence of God.

Between the date of the organization of Ursula Parlor No.1 and June 1887, seventeen Parlors were instituted.

The first Grand Parlor was held in San Francisco in July 1887, with the seventeen Parlors instituted by Ursula No.1 represented by thirty-nine delegates. Tina L. Kane, President of the Mother Parlor, was elected as the first Grand President. Years later the special honor and title, Founder of the Order of Native Daughters of the Golden West, was conferred upon Lilly O. Reichling, later Mrs. Lilly O. Reichling Dyer.

Ursula Parlor No. 1 reserved the right to institute the Subordinate Parlors until that right was surrendered to the Grand Parlor in July 1887, when it met in San Francisco for its first session. At this time, Grand Parlor adopted its Constitution and selected a full corps of Grand Officers.

Independence Hall Community Center - History

Independence Hall Community Center, Arnold, California, was officially established in 1974. From its inception, the Hall has served as a non-profit, non-tax-supported community facility for the Ebbetts Pass area. Originally, the Hall was the Avery School, a one-room elementary school with a divider creating two classrooms.

The attendance area extended along California Highway 4 from Camp Connell nearly to Murphys. The first function to be held in the building was a school Christmas program in December, 1941. The school was rededicated in 1964 as Hazel Fisher Elementary School in honor of its first principal and teacher, Miss Hazel Fisher. Following construction of a new Hazel Fisher Elementary School, the original building was signed over to the Ebbetts Pass Wonderland Association and in recognition of our nation’s bicentennial was renamed Independence Hall. The Hall was dedicated and remains this area’s community center.

05:00 PM The Blonde Tells at Camp Connell General Store
Camp Connell, CA...The Blonde Tells at Camp Connell General Store. Music, Beer, Wine Wood Fired Pizza, Burgers, Fries and a whole lot more - now at the Beer Garden at Camp Connell - The Beer Garden is open Fridays and Saturdays for Lunch and Dinner. This event is a special thanks to the Calaveras County Local Road Crews, CalTrans, and The California Highway Patrol

The story of Camp Connell Continues....

The Camp Connell of today was largely influenced by the surging popularity of auto travel through the mountains inspired when Dr. D. Sargent of Angels Camp became the first to drive an automobile over Ebbetts Pass in 1908. Family camping was destined to become an extremely popular recreational activity To meet those demands, Jack Connell began construction of a campground, cabins, general store and gas pumps in 1928. He and his wife named their endeavor "Camp Connell". Opened for business in 1929, the general store and gas station have been in operation ever since. The Connell's continued to expand the store and added a café to serve the increasing number of visitors. By 1934 the Post Office was moved to the store and became "Camp Connell Station". The store was a local gathering place where local residents and vacationers alike would come to share news and leave messages, much as it is today. Occasionally, Circuit Court was convened in the building. Monte Wolfe, Art and Harry Schimke, the Whittles, Hunts, Tryons, Lombardis, and Airolas were frequent visitors.

While the popularity of the general store and café continued, the campground was closed in 1949 and the property was subdivided into lots selling for $600 each. The cabins remained as part of Camp Connell until the 1960's, when the highway was realigned to accommodate the ski resort and village at Bear Valley, as well as the development of Big Trees Village. The old highway became the current two accesses to Camp Connell and the property has stayed much the same ever since.

Today the Camp Connell General Store is one of the oldest Chevron stations in California as well as the longest continuously operated retail business between Murphys and Markleeville. It is a popular stop for visitors and a cherished part of the local community."
