All Day Valentine’s Adoption Special!
San Andreas, CA...Valentine’s Adoption Special! FOCAS –Friends Of Calaveras Animal Services is a non-profit organization with its primary mission being to enhance County Animals Services by providing a better environment for the animals housed at the existing county shelter. It was created by a small group of local residents who understood that Animal Services is also public safety and plays an important role in keeping our community healthy.


FOCAS is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization. Donations are tax deductible.

All Day Mark Twain Medical Center & Soroptimist Offering FREE Cholesterol Tests During February
San Andreas, CA...As part of a continuing partnership with Soroptimist International of Calaveras County, Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) will be offering FREE cholesterol tests for women in Calaveras County during American Heart Month in February. This FREE screening is also known as a lipid panel. The test measures good and bad cholesterol and triglycerides helping to identify women at greater risk of heart disease and stroke. The “Take It to Heart Program” offers the free cholesterol tests throughout February to women who live in Calaveras County. A 12 hour fast is recommended or no food after midnight, as is proof of Calaveras County residency. Women needing the FREE cholesterol screenings do not need to schedule an appointment.


Calaveras County women wanting to participate can come to the MTMC laboratory, or any one of MTMC’s Medical Centers located in Angels Camp, Arnold, Copperopolis, and Valley Springs. Vouchers can be obtained in the above listed locations as well as other healthcare providers countywide. For more information about the FREE cholesterol tests please call the MTMC Laboratory at 754-2583.

Dr. Nancy E. Muleady-Mecham, Ph.D.


This month we welcome Nancy E. Muleady-Mecham, Ph.D., as our guest speaker. Doc Nancy is an Adjunct Professor of biology at Northern Arizona University and Columbia College, Sonora as well as a Visiting Lecturer for the University of Virginia Semester At Sea Program where she taught biology around the world. Doc Nancy was selected by the United States as a Fulbright Scholar and traveled to the Russian Federation to teach at Gorno-Altaisk State University in southwest Siberia and to conduct research in remote protected areas.

Nancy is a retired United States National Park Ranger and lives in the Sierra Nevada with her family. When not working on her research on Giant Sequoias she loves to backpack. She has completed solo hikes of the John Muir and High Sierra Trails through the Sierra Nevada, hiked through the Alps on The Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt, France and is a Pacific Crest Trail section hiker, Mexico to Canada.

DocNancy has two wildly interesting books published about her work as a National Park Ranger. These books are available on Amazon or at the Calaveras Big Trees​ ​State Park, Visitor Center.

Doc Nancy will be speaking on the life of a National ParkRanger. From the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, the Everglades and more, Nancy will give you a behind the scenes look at the work and duties of a Park Ranger. Stories from being a Naturalist, Firefighter, EMS and Search and Rescue Specialist with photos and videosthatwill highlight the talk.

SIR (Sons in Retirement) is a Men’s only organization. We are not political, and not associated to any religious organization, we are not a service club, we have no paid employees and no physical assets; we meet entirely for the benefit of our members. Luncheon visitors are asked to contact the Membership Director about attending scheduled meetings, we welcome all retired gentlemen.

04:00 PM OHV Enthusiasts Encouraged to Join Stanislaus National Forest at Public Meeting
Sonora, CA...The Stanislaus National Forest is hosting a public meeting to gather feedback from OHV enthusiasts on Feb. 20 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Forest Supervisor’s office, 19777 Greenley Road, Sonora. The forest is developing preliminary applications for the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division 2018/ 2019 grant cycle. The applications to the OHMVR Division include route/ trail maintenance and repair, law enforcement activities across the four ranger districts and OHV education programs.


Past grants have provided funding for route/ trail maintenance and repairs, including clearing downed trees on more than 1,693 miles of OHV routes on Stanislaus National Forest, provided law enforcement patrols on an additional 756 miles of native surface roads on the forest, printed the free Motor Vehicle Use Maps, as well as other education, planning, development and restoration activities.

Once completed, the preliminary grant applications will be available on the OHMVR website between March 6 and April 2, 2018 for review and comment. To review the grant applications submitted by the forest, go to http://olga.ohv.parks.ca.gov/egrams_ohmvr/user/home.aspx.

Murphys, CA...QPR Suicide Prevention Training Class. The Calaveras LGBTQ Youth Group is hosting a training class on suicide prevention. All members of the community are invited to attend. Tuesday, February 20th 7-8pm at the First Congregational Church in Murphys.

suicidal
● How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing
