Prescribed Burns Planned to Begin Week of October 21st at Calaveras Big Trees State Park
Arnold, CA...California State Parks in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection (CAL FIRE) are planning to begin a series of prescribed burns beginning on or around the week of October 21, 2019 through the end of November in Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The goal is to complete 382 acres this fall (see maps below). Ignitions are expected to occur when weather conditions are favorable and adequate resources are available. Some of the units have been previously thinned to reduce the fuel loading, which allows for a safer and more controllable broadcast burn. Much of this work was funded through Propositions 84 and 1 grant from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, an agency of the State of California.

These burns are part of the prescribed fire program for vegetation management, hazardous fuel load reduction, wildlife habitat improvement, enhance the health of the forest by removing diseased materials, restoring essential nutrients to the soil, and reducing the chance of a catastrophic wildfire. Through forest thinning and prescribed fire, an ecologically healthy forest system can be restored and maintained. Additional benefits of these prescribed burns include protection for the Big Trees developments (Visitors Center, campground, etc.), and the North Grove of giant sequoias.
Pile burning will also take place throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons within the North and South Grove and along the Big Trees Village and Blue Lake Spring park boundaries.
Prescribed burns produce significantly less smoke than wildfires. The burns are planned and coordinated with the Calaveras and Tuolumne County Air Districts in order to minimize the smoke impacts on surrounding communities. All burning depends on weather and air quality conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal. If the conditions, such as weather or vegetation are not conducive for burning, the burns will be rescheduled.
Communities near Calaveras Big Trees State Park, including Dorrington, Big Trees Village, White Pines, Blue Lake Spring and Arnold may experience smoke from the burning operations. California State Parks is working with the Calaveras and Tuolumne County Air Pollution Control Districts to limit impacts to smoke sensitive areas.
Both Highway 4 and the Walter W. Smith Parkway will remain open but may experience delays due to smoke and other hazards. The Parkway may experience short-term closures prior to the end of season closure. Some public campsites and dirt roads near the burn areas will be closed to public access during prescribed burn operations including the East and West Moran Roads, East and West 5000 Foot Roads, as well as the South Rim Road. Please obey all warning signs.

10th Annual Murphys Dia de los Muertos, Saturday November 2, 2019 from 11am-6pm
Murphys, CA...Celebrate the Day of the Dead in the Land of the Skulls for our 10th Annual Dia de los Muertos celebration so plan to join us! Murphys businesses and tasting rooms will be celebrating their 10th annual Day of the Dead again this year with traditional decorations, treats and celebrations between 11am and 6pm.Every year on the first Saturday in November, Murphys celebrates the lives of those who have passed on but are with us in heart and spirit on this day.
Participating businesses and vendors will be offering authentic cultural art, food, sugar skulls, face painting, and live music, as well as displaying ofrendas (altars) celebrating the lives of those who have passed on but are with us in heart and spirit on the Day of the Dead.
Join us for the celebration in the Park from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm featuring face painters, folklorico dancers, rondalla musicians, and artisan vendors. Traditional food and drinks will be for sale in the Park until 4:00 pm or whenever they sell out. Purchases of food, wine, and beer will benefit the Murphys Community Club who are responsible for maintaining and improving our lovely park along the creek.
The Catrina and Catrin Dress Contest will begin at 4:30 pm in the Community Park followed by a final blessing of the messages to the dead. Those wishing to compete in the Catrina Contest must be signed up by 3 pm. Stop by our booth in the Park to sign up. There will be competitions for men, women, and children. The final blessing of the messages to the dead will begin at 5:30 pm. Mexican hot chocolate and pan de muertos will be available for purchase during & after or until it’s sold out.
The Folklorico Dancers will be offering dancing lessons in the Native Sons Hall beginning at 2:30 pm. Sign up at our booth in the Park or just come by the Hall at 2:30pm.
In the event of rain, all entertainment and food sales will be in the Native Sons Hall at 389 Main Street in Historic Downtown Murphys.
Don’t forget to stop by the Murphys Historic Schoolhouse on Jones for more altars and activities including the characters from Coco.
This ancient holiday traces its roots back to the indigenous cultures of Mexico, Latin America, and Europe but has become inextricably intertwined with the Catholic observance of All Saints Day and All Souls Day over time. Although this celebration is associated with the dead, it is traditionally a period full of life, happiness, color, food, family, and fun. In Mexico, outdoor markets display and sell symbolic items like special breads, pottery, baskets, candles, paper puppets, candy skulls, and flowers. Skeletons are also an important symbol of this day and are displayed hugging, dancing and laughing in shop windows and on street corners.
Traditional activities are believed to “welcome the souls of the dead.” The souls are said to return each year to enjoy the pleasures of the life that they once had. These souls are thought to return as spirits from another world to be with their loved ones for a few brief hours. A widely held belief is that the souls of children (angelitos) return first so food and gifts appealing to children are set out for them. The adult dead are said to return a day or two later and their favorite items, as well as elaborate food and drink, are set out for them as well. It is believed that candlelight, as well as the scent of marigolds and copal incense, will help the ghosts find their way back home.
The public is welcome to participate in the remembrance of loved ones by contributing items to the Community Altar in the Park or specific altars. Please contact the individual business owner first though to make sure there is an appropriate space for your item. Make sure to check out our program online to see a list of all the Ofrendas and activities or pick up a printed program at our booth in the Park. Programs will also be available at The Spice Tin, Marisolio Tasting Room, Tanner Vineyards Tasting Room, Murphys Pourhouse and the Bodega del Sur Tasting Room in the days before the event.

Old Timers Museum Walking Tours Are Every Saturday at 10am.
Murphys, CA...Each Saturday morning the Old Timers Museum in Murphys offers a historical walking tour of Murphys. No reservation necessary. Meet at the Museum, 470 Main St, Murphys, across from the Hotel 10 am. Walk is 1-1/12 hours.

Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. Fun For the Whole Family Today at The Calaveras Family Showcase
Valley Springs, CA...The Calaveras Family Showcase is a show where all singers, dancers, hams and show-offs are invited to display their talents to help create a fun show the first Saturday in November from 3-5pm. Originally a hotel, the historic Metropolitan was built at the base of Main Street in 1859. A fire consumed the building in 1926, and in its place a movie theater was constructed in the early 1950s. It was later renovated as a dining hall and performance venue.
Rumor has it that Mark Twain found his inspiration for The Jumping Frog right in the Metropolitan’s luxurious bar-room.

Jill & The Giants to Rock Sequoia Woods this Weekend.
Arnold, CA...Sequoia Woods Country Club has a big Jill & the Giants concert ahead for you this weekend. Celebrate the Day of the Dead and come in costume. Sequoia Woods Country Club is located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, roughly between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, at an elevation of 4000 feet. The club house is open to the public, with a bar and lounge, dining room and seasonal deli. The beautiful setting can be enjoyed from indoors or outside on the deck, with a view down the main tree-lined golf fairway.
The bar serves food several evenings each week and the restaurant is open for dinner every weekend. The dinner menu has a perfect variety of traditional favorites, with creative and contemporary preparations, and our guests marvel at the quality of cuisine to be found here, in this little mountain hamlet. There is dancing in the lounge every Saturday night, with a DJ or frequent live bands. The deli opens its windows to the deck for an extended summer season, with tasty sandwiches, salads and hot specials. Special group events find our venue especially accommodating and fun. This is a truly lovely place to enjoy good food, good friends and good scenery.
