10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Old Timers Museum Walking Tours Are Every Saturday at 10am.
Murphys, CA...Each Saturday morning the Old Timers Museum in Murphys offers a historical walking tour of Murphys. No reservation necessary. Meet at the Museum, 470 Main St, Murphys, across from the Hotel 10 am. Walk is 1-1/12 hours.

A stroll down tree-lined Main Street transports visitors back to the mid-1800s with buildings bearing thick stone walls, iron shutters and pastoral gardens with white picket fences. Once you experience the charm and hospitality of Murphys, the historic “Queen of the Sierra”, you’ll want to come back again and again!

Rich in Gold Rush History, Murphys today is a vibrant, thriving community of over 2,000 residents. Many of the surrounding hillsides are rich with the fine wine grapes grown in our area. Murphys offers wineries, art galleries, live theater, eclectic shops, fine restaurants, charming hotels and B&B’s as well as a multitude of outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities.

Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. True entrepreneurs with the luck of the Irish, they were a part of the very first immigrant party – the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy families – to successfully bring wagons over the Sierra in 1844, paving the way for westward migration. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. It is reported that the brothers took two million dollars in gold ore from the Murphys Diggins in one year’s time, making them millionaires before the age of 25. The sizzling Gold Rush camp of Murphys also played host to President Grant, Mark Twain and Black Bart. And in some circles, to an even more famous chap – a young, inquisitive lad who literally changed the scientific world, Dr. Albert Michelson.

Our friendly residents invite you to revisit the past while exploring the “new” upscale Murphys. Guided walking tours of the town’s many historic buildings including the home of Albert Michelson, the first American Nobel Prize winner, are conducted every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., starting in front of the Old Timers Museum on Main Street.

The story of Camp Connell Continues....

The Camp Connell of today was largely influenced by the surging popularity of auto travel through the mountains inspired when Dr. D. Sargent of Angels Camp became the first to drive an automobile over Ebbetts Pass in 1908. Family camping was destined to become an extremely popular recreational activity To meet those demands, Jack Connell began construction of a campground, cabins, general store and gas pumps in 1928. He and his wife named their endeavor "Camp Connell". Opened for business in 1929, the general store and gas station have been in operation ever since. The Connell's continued to expand the store and added a café to serve the increasing number of visitors. By 1934 the Post Office was moved to the store and became "Camp Connell Station". The store was a local gathering place where local residents and vacationers alike would come to share news and leave messages, much as it is today. Occasionally, Circuit Court was convened in the building. Monte Wolfe, Art and Harry Schimke, the Whittles, Hunts, Tryons, Lombardis, and Airolas were frequent visitors.

While the popularity of the general store and café continued, the campground was closed in 1949 and the property was subdivided into lots selling for $600 each. The cabins remained as part of Camp Connell until the 1960's, when the highway was realigned to accommodate the ski resort and village at Bear Valley, as well as the development of Big Trees Village. The old highway became the current two accesses to Camp Connell and the property has stayed much the same ever since.

Today the Camp Connell General Store is one of the oldest Chevron stations in California as well as the longest continuously operated retail business between Murphys and Markleeville. It is a popular stop for visitors and a cherished part of the local community."

07:00 PM William Shakespeare's The Tempest, Directed by Tara Kayton, Presented by Shakespeare on the Vine
Murphys, CA...(Now Playing)..In their fourth season, Shakespeare on the Vine Theatre Company will present William Shakespeare’s comedy The Tempest -- critically thought to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote. The piece will be performed on the outdoor Arden Stage at Brice Station Vineyards. Director, Tara Kayton and her talented company will bring this magical story of family, art, and reunion to life from August 9 to September 1.Twelve years ago, Prospero was the beloved Duke of Milan, but his attention to books caused him to leave the management of his state to his brother, Antonio. Eventually, with the help of Alonso, Queen of Naples, Antonio usurped the dukedom for himself. Prospero and his baby daughter Miranda were put to sea and eventually landed on a fantastical island inhabited only by a native, Caliban, and a powerful spirit, Ariel.

Since then Prospero has ruled the island and its two inhabitants by his knowledge and books. When
Prospero’s enemies are close to the island and he sees an opportunity to work his revenge, Ariel raises a
storm that wrecks them, but really disperses them about the isle unharmed. Ariel leads Ferdinand, the
Queen's son, to Prospero's cell, where he and Miranda instantly fall in love. The Queen of Naples searches
for her son, although fearing him to be drowned, while Antonio plots more corruption. The boat drunkards,
Stephano and Trinculo, encounter Caliban and plan to kill Prospero so that they can rule the island.
Prospero presents the young couple with the blessings of marriage, ensuring his lasting lineage in Milan
and Naples before reuniting everyone on the island to return to Italy.

The cast features: Elyse Sharp as the ethereal Ariel, Jake Edmondson as the wronged Duke Prospero,
Sean M. Lewis as the island native Caliban, and an island spirit musician is played by Holly
Johnston. Tyler Mattson and Vickie Hall adorably play the young lovers, Ferdinand and Miranda. The
drunken clowns are hilariously paired in Lillian McLeod as Stephano and Sara Garcia as Trinculo.
Lahna VonEpps joins the cast as Queen Alonso, John Baker as the evil brother Antonio, Stephen Daly
as loyal Gonzalo, and Laura Johnson as the plotting Adrian.

The creative team is composed of: Director Tara Kayton, Dramaturg Ryan M. Davis, Stage Manager
Kierin Harrison, Production Manager Janet Cunningham, Scenic Carpenter Dan Swanson, Costume
Designer Herin Kaputkin, Lighting Designer Ross Aldrich, Scenic Painters Dolores Mast & Lubov
Mazur, Assistant Stage Manager Nicole Job, and Production Assistants Jenia Willhite, Cortney
Gillespie, Nichole Markle, and Daniel Harrison.

This season marks the company’s fourth summer at Brice Station after successful productions of Hamlet
(’17), As You Like It (’16), and The Taming of the Shrew (’15). These productions helped to earn Brice
Station the Calaveras Visitor’s Bureau’s Innovations in Tourism Awards for Most Innovative
Attraction and Most Innovative Business. Brice Station Vineyards’ award-winning wine will be available

07:30 PM Mike Marshall & Caterina Lichtenberg, August 25th at Twisted Oak Winery in Vallecito!
Vallecito, CA...Mike Marshall is one of the world’s most accomplished and versatile string instrumentalists in America today. In 2014 Mike was nominated for a Grammy Award for his recording with the Turtle Island Quartet in the ‘Classical Compendium’ category. Mike is indeed a living compendium of musical styles. A master of mandolin, guitar, mandocello and violin, he has created some of the most adventurous and interesting instrumental music on over 40 recordings to date that seamlessly blend his American roots background with a deep understanding of Brazilian, European classical and folks styles and American jazz and pop music.

Whether playing his own compositions with Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck or Chris Thile, Brazilian choro music with Hamilton de Holanda or Baroque classical music with his partner, German mandolin virtuoso Caterina Lichtenberg, Mike is able to swing gracefully between all of these musical worlds with a unique blend of virtuosity and musical integrity that is rare in the cross-cultural musical world of today.

Caterina Lichtenberg is one of the most important classical mandolinists in the world today. Raised in Germany, Caterina graduated with highest honors from the Music Conservatory in Cologne. She now holds the position of Professor of classical mandolin/soprano lute at that prestigious institution. (The only position of its kind in the world today) For over 20 years Caterina has been recording, teaching and touring throughout Europe, Japan, Taiwan, South America, Canada and the U.S. to rave reviews.

“As arguably the world’s foremost mandolin/mandocello player, you get to hear some amazing performances, but also some richly
melodic tunes that range from bluegrass and European folk to jazz and Brazilian fusion.” — All About Jazz

Advance tickets are only $29 and can be purchased right here online. Concertgoers will be admitted starting at about 6:30pm - please carpool! - the show starts at about 7:30pm. Admission is $10 for children under 12. All proceeds from children's ticket sales will be donated to support music education in Calaveras County.

Tickets will be $35 at the door. Please order now!

A yummy BBQ rib dinner with side salads will be available for purchase for $15. Delicious Twisted Oak Wines, popcorn, cookies, & soft drinks will also be available for purchase. Please do not bring other alcoholic beverages. Our license does not permit it.

Seating is "festival style", first come first served - but all locations are good! Bring your own low back "beach" chairs for up-front seating. Click here for everything you might like to know about our concert venue.

Please note: Advance ticket sales end at 4pm on the day of the event - or when sold out. After that time tickets - if available - will be available at the winery after 6:30pm. In any case, all ticket sales are final and there are no refunds.

Swinging gracefully between bluegrass, jazz, classical and Brazilian musical styles, Mike Marshall is one of the world’s most accomplished and versatile mandolinists. He began his career as a member of The David Grisman Quintet in the 1970s and has toured and recorded with Stephane Grappelli, Mark O’Connor, Chris Thile, Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Darol Anger, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck. On radio Mike can be heard on the “Car Talk” (NPR) soundtrack alongside Earl Scruggs, and he wrote the theme music for San Francisco’s KQED talk-show “forum.”

Mike can be heard on the Sony Classical label with bassist Edgar Meyer, violinist Joshua Bell and mandolinist Sam Bush as well as recordings with the Swedish group Vasen, the GRAMMY-winning ensemble The Turtle Island Quartet and his bluegrass band, Psychograss, on his own Adventure Music label. New standards of mandolin virtuosity have been set by Mike’s recordings with fellow international mandolinists Chris Thile (US), Hamilton de Holanda (Brazil), and Caterina Lichtenberg (Germany).

As a featured soloist Caterina Lichtenberg has performed with the New Century Orchestra under Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, the LA Guitar Quartet, the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, Germany under Diego Fasolis and the Aachen Chamber Orchestra. She has also had concerts with the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Orchestra under Fabio Luisi, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly, the MDR Sinfonie Orchestra under Howard Arman, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Lorin Maazel, with Brigitte Engelhard (harpsichord), Thomas Mueller-Pering (guitar) and with Art Garfunkel on live German TV.

Mrs. Lichtenberg’s collaboration with American mandolinists Mike Marshall brought together two of the greatest mandolinists in the world. Their debut recording in 2010 blurred the lines between their classical, jazz, bluegrass and Brazilian musical backgrounds. Their 2015 CD is a recording of Johann Sebastian Bach duets for mandolin and mandocello (The Two Part Inventions, Organ Duets and 3 Canons from the Art of the Fugue).
