Middleton's has been part of the Angels Camp Community Since 1955!

Family owned and operated since 1955, Middleton’s Mark Twain Center, Inc. was originally Calaveras Mercantile bought by Hank and Matilda Middleton in 1955. Starting as a furniture, feed, fabric, and appliance business in the original 1500-sq-ft location proved to not meet the needs of the community. Hank and Mat were now raising their young family, and seeing the potential growth and needs of Calaveras County, purchased acres of land in 1960 just on the edge of town. They built and developed the first shopping center in the county. Hank anchored his 27,000 sq. ft. furniture, appliance, hardware, and gift shop with a local bank and grocery store.

Fast forward to 1977 with youngest son Bob graduating college with a BS in Business. Taking over the family business, Bob also saw the needs of the community he was raised in and joined a National Buying Group for Middleton’s in 1981. Being a member of BrandSource gives Middleton’s the ability to serve their customers with name brand furniture, mattresses, appliances, and televisions such as La–Z–Boy, Ashley, Simmons, Tempur–Pedic, GE, Electrolux, Speed Queen, Frigidaire, Samsung TVs and also Hoover and Simplicity vacuums at competitive prices with the bonus of expert customer service that an independent retailer can offer.

Here it is, 2012, and Middleton’s Mark Twain Center still boasts a local bank, trophy shop, cellular phone store, grocery store, Middleton’s Gold Crown Hallmark shop, and their BrandSource Furniture, Appliance, and TV store. This 3rd Generation Family Business is a viable part of the entire community with involvement in schools, service clubs, and scholarships to high schools, and belongs to the local business association. Middleton’s was also chosen Business of the Year in 2010 by the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce.

After over 57 years in business, Middleton’s wants to invite all new and old customers to check out all that we offer for your household needs in the furniture, appliance, mattress, and TV department.

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Old Timers Museum Walking Tours Are Every Saturday at 10am.
Murphys, CA...Each Saturday morning the Old Timers Museum in Murphys offers a historical walking tour of Murphys. No reservation necessary. Meet at the Museum, 470 Main St, Murphys, across from the Hotel 10 am. Walk is 1-1/12 hours.

A stroll down tree-lined Main Street transports visitors back to the mid-1800s with buildings bearing thick stone walls, iron shutters and pastoral gardens with white picket fences. Once you experience the charm and hospitality of Murphys, the historic “Queen of the Sierra”, you’ll want to come back again and again!

Rich in Gold Rush History, Murphys today is a vibrant, thriving community of over 2,000 residents. Many of the surrounding hillsides are rich with the fine wine grapes grown in our area. Murphys offers wineries, art galleries, live theater, eclectic shops, fine restaurants, charming hotels and B&B’s as well as a multitude of outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities.

Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. True entrepreneurs with the luck of the Irish, they were a part of the very first immigrant party – the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy families – to successfully bring wagons over the Sierra in 1844, paving the way for westward migration. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. It is reported that the brothers took two million dollars in gold ore from the Murphys Diggins in one year’s time, making them millionaires before the age of 25. The sizzling Gold Rush camp of Murphys also played host to President Grant, Mark Twain and Black Bart. And in some circles, to an even more famous chap – a young, inquisitive lad who literally changed the scientific world, Dr. Albert Michelson.

Our friendly residents invite you to revisit the past while exploring the “new” upscale Murphys. Guided walking tours of the town’s many historic buildings including the home of Albert Michelson, the first American Nobel Prize winner, are conducted every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., starting in front of the Old Timers Museum on Main Street.

07:00 PM - 09:00 PM Otis Redding III – A Tribute to his father’s music! At the Sutter Creek Theatre 7/13
Otis Redding III performing his father’s hits, his own music, and other great Motown Music!
A rich family legacy. An enduring name that has been embedded in the hearts of millions around the globe. A history of solid performances for fans in both the United States and in Europe. Not many performers today have such advantages like Otis Redding III.
Legendary soul singer Otis Redding left his son with a musical heritage that extends far beyond the hit records for which he is famous.
Indeed, Otis Redding III has been bestowed with his father’s unique musical gift, and for nearly 25 years has put this talent to good use by not only touring and performing, but also writing and arranging since the early 80’s.
An accomplished and recognized artist in his own right, Otis Redding III grew even more as a musician and performer touring with his band The Reddings. He did not realize until much later in his career that it is truly his father’s talent that pulses in his veins.
“The music has to have feeling and emotion…” says Otis. “While I’m playing guitar or singing, I don’t proclaim to be a vocalist like my father.”
Otis’ reach extends beyond his music and his performances as well. Actively involved in his family’s philanthropic organization, The Otis Redding Foundation, he participates in the annual Otis Redding Singer/Songwriter Camp.
Continuing in his family’s tradition of compassion and community contribution, Otis remains dedicated to mentoring both youth and musical hopefuls. Today, Otis Redding III still performs at special events across the United States and Europe, keeping his family’s musical heritage alive.

07:00 PM "Moon Over Buffalo" Continues on at Murphys Creek Theatre
Murphys, CA...“The Show Must Go On!” In Murphys Creek Theatre’s 2019 summer production. In Ken Ludwig’s MOON OVER BUFFALO, all character stop at nothing to live up to that infamous phrase. The play follows George and Charlotte Hay, fading stage and film stars of the 1950s. At the moment, they're playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in rep in Buffalo, New York… with only five actors. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George's dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra, Mr. Hollywood himself, is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie Twilight of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for George, Charlotte and their devoted company manager Paul Singer, everything that could go wrong does go wrong. The chaos is aided by a visit from their daughter, Roz, her clueless fiancé and hilarious uncertainty about which play they're actually performing. Adding more fuel to the comedic fire is Charlotte’s deaf, stage manager Mother who despises George with every fiber of her being.

Ken Ludwig is a two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright who has written over 26 plays and musicals, including 6 shows on Broadway and 7 in London's West End. His first Broadway play, Lend Me A Tenor, won two Tony Awards and was called "one of the classic comedies of the 20th century" by The Washington Post. His other awards include the Helen Hayes Award, the 2017 Samuel French Award for Sustained Excellence in the American Theatre, the Edgar Award for Best Mystery of the Year, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Contributions to the American Theater. His book How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare, published by Penguin/Random House, won the Falstaff Award for Best Shakespeare Book of the Year, and his essays are published by the Yale Review. Ken's best known works include Crazy For You (5 years on Broadway, Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Musical), Lend Me A Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo, The Game's Afoot, Baskerville, Sherwood, A Fox on the Fairway, and a stage version of Murder on the Orient Express, written expressly at the request of the Agatha Christie Estate. His work has been performed in over 30 countries in more than 20 languages, and is produced somewhere in the United States and abroad every night of the year.

The show is directed by MCT Artistic Director, Robbie Allen. He last directed MCT’s 2018 production of The Mousetrap, and was last seen onstage this year in The Whipping Man and Barefoot in the Park.

“I absolutely love this play,” says Allen, “It is hilarious from start to finish and the characters are incredibly rich and fun. The play relies heavily on situational and farcical comedy, while still delivering very human and relatable character arcs. The writing is phenomenal and makes my job easy.” He also adds, “The cast we’ve assembled is incredible and such a joy to work with.”

Moon Over Buffalo stars: Sid Marsh as George Hay, Elaine Saculla as Charlotte Hay, Todd Thomas as Paul Singer, Alyson Wren as Roz Hay, Sharon Perras as Ethel, Michael Crich as Richard, Charlie Cites as Eileen and Colten Minehart as Howard.

The play runs JUNE 21st – JULY 14th . Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights at 7pm and Sundays at 2pm. Murphys Creek Theatre is located at
580 S. Algiers St. Murphys CA
