Independence Hall Community Center - History

Independence Hall Community Center, Arnold, California, was officially established in 1974. From its inception, the Hall has served as a non-profit, non-tax-supported community facility for the Ebbetts Pass area. Originally, the Hall was the Avery School, a one-room elementary school with a divider creating two classrooms.

The attendance area extended along California Highway 4 from Camp Connell nearly to Murphys. The first function to be held in the building was a school Christmas program in December, 1941. The school was rededicated in 1964 as Hazel Fisher Elementary School in honor of its first principal and teacher, Miss Hazel Fisher. Following construction of a new Hazel Fisher Elementary School, the original building was signed over to the Ebbetts Pass Wonderland Association and in recognition of our nation’s bicentennial was renamed Independence Hall. The Hall was dedicated and remains this area’s community center.

Jerry Douglas

Dobro master and 14-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas is to the resonator guitar what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar: elevating, transforming, and reinventing the instrument in countless ways. In addition to being widely recognized as the foremost master of the Dobro, Jerry Douglas is a freewheeling, forward-thinking recording artist whose output incorporates elements of bluegrass, country, rock, jazz, blues and Celtic into his distinctive musical vision.

Called “dobro’s matchless contemporary master,” by The New York Times, fourteen-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas is one of the most innovative recording artists in music, both as a solo artist and member of groundbreaking bands including J.D. Crowe & the New South, the Country Gentlemen, Boone Creek, the Grammy-winning The Earls of Leicester, and Strength In Numbers. Douglas’ distinctive sound graces more than 1500 albums, including discs released by Garth Brooks, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Elvis Costello, Earl Scruggs, and Ray Charles, among many others.

Since 1998, he’s been a key member of “Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas”, touring extensively and co-producing and playing on a series of platinum albums. He has produced albums for Krauss, the Del McCoury Band, Maura O’Connell, and Jesse Winchester and is is co-Music Director of the acclaimed BBC TV series Transatlantic Sessions, and his latest solo album Traveler features guest appearances by such notable friends as Paul Simon, Mumford & Sons, and Eric Clapton, among others.

As he continues his incalculable influence on Americana, bluegrass and their many related genres, Douglas forges as a true pioneer in American music.

The Earls of Leicester

The Grammy© and IBMA award-winning band The Earls of Leicester encompasses dobro great Jerry Douglas plus acclaimed writer, producer, and solo artist Shawn Camp on lead vocals and guitar, renowned Nashville banjoist Charlie Cushman on banjo and guitars, second-generation fiddle phenom Johnny Warren, and Barry Bales, Douglas' longtime bandmate in Alison Krauss and Union Station, on vocals and bass. The group is the product of the band’s shared lifelong passion for the music of bluegrass pioneers Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and their band the Foggy Mountain Boys, and pays homage to their seminal work in the '50s and '60s which created the template for what we know as contemporary bluegrass, and transcended traditional genre barriers to popularize the music with an unprecedented mass audience.

07:00 PM The Route 88 Band At Camp Connell General Store May 27th
Camp Connell, CA...Since 1929 The Camp Connell General Store has been serving generation after generation of customers. New Owner Dan Tulipani and his family are excited to continue and expand on the rich fabric of history and traditions that have made the store an integral part of the community. With Dining, Wine, Beer, Gifts, Groceries & Gas they have everything you need to make your high country adventure a great one.

The story of Camp Connell Continues....

The Camp Connell of today was largely influenced by the surging popularity of auto travel through the mountains inspired when Dr. D. Sargent of Angels Camp became the first to drive an automobile over Ebbetts Pass in 1908. Family camping was destined to become an extremely popular recreational activity To meet those demands, Jack Connell began construction of a campground, cabins, general store and gas pumps in 1928. He and his wife named their endeavor "Camp Connell". Opened for business in 1929, the general store and gas station have been in operation ever since. The Connell's continued to expand the store and added a café to serve the increasing number of visitors. By 1934 the Post Office was moved to the store and became "Camp Connell Station". The store was a local gathering place where local residents and vacationers alike would come to share news and leave messages, much as it is today. Occasionally, Circuit Court was convened in the building. Monte Wolfe, Art and Harry Schimke, the Whittles, Hunts, Tryons, Lombardis, and Airolas were frequent visitors.

While the popularity of the general store and café continued, the campground was closed in 1949 and the property was subdivided into lots selling for $600 each. The cabins remained as part of Camp Connell until the 1960's, when the highway was realigned to accommodate the ski resort and village at Bear Valley, as well as the development of Big Trees Village. The old highway became the current two accesses to Camp Connell and the property has stayed much the same ever since.

Today the Camp Connell General Store is one of the oldest Chevron stations in California as well as the longest continuously operated retail business between Murphys and Markleeville. It is a popular stop for visitors and a cherished part of the local community."
