History of the Murphys Historic Hotel

The Murphys Hotel was first opened in the summer of 1856 by James Sperry and John Perry, and was known for many years as the Sperry & Perry Hotel. The hotel thrived as the natural stopover for Matteson’s Stage en route from the railhead at Milton to the Calaveras Big Trees, which had just been discovered by A.T. Gus Dowd in 1852. The grove of giant sequoias was one of the greatest natural wonders of the nineteenth century, attracting people from all over the world. Mercer Caverns, discovered in 1885 by Walter J. Mercer one mile away from the hotel, also enticed many visitors to the area, as did the rich gold diggings.

Notable guests who stayed at the Murphys Hotel during its early years include Mark Twain, Horatio Algiers Jr., John Jacob Astor, Thomas J. Lipton, J.P. Morgan, and former President Ulysses S. Grant. Copies of the original registration signatures of these notables may be viewed today in the hotel’s lobby. The original register now resides at the Calaveras County Museum in San Andreas.

Fire destroyed most of downtown Murphys and damaged the hotel in 1859. The hotel was protected because of it’s stone construction and iron shutters, and was restored and reopened in 1860. The hotel was operated by a succession of owners over the next 100 years, undergoing two name changes, first to the Mitchler Hotel and then, in 1945, to the Murphys Hotel. In 1963, a group of 35 investors purchased the hotel. Former University of the Pacific students, they had been coming to the hotel since 1942 as members of the informal Murphys Ale and Quail Club, and called their investment group the “Murphys Ale and Quail Corporation.” Numerous improvements were made to the facility over the years, including the addition of the two motel wings just west of the original structure.
In 1978, several original members as well as two new investors formed a new corporation called MAQ, Inc. The group achieved a listing for the hotel on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2003, long-time Calaveras county resident Dorian Faught became the sixth owner of the Murphys Hotel. Under Faught’s guidance, additional enhancements and improvements to the hotel were made, with close attention to preserving the character and feel of this very historic facility. in 2012 a trio of managers took over operations to help guide the nineteenth century hotel into catering to 21st century guests.

Over 150 years after it first opened, the Murphys Hotel still hosts travelers touring the central Mother Lode region while also functioning as the true center piece for the downtown Murphys business community. Local fraternal, service, and professional organizations use the hotel for their monthly meetings, and the hotel regularly hosts seminars, retreats and board meetings for a number of state associations, cities and other organizations from outside the area. The Murphys Hotel is not simply a preserved relic of the nineteenth century. Rather, it proudly continues its long-standing tradition of serving the needs of its community and travelers from around the world.

About Hovey

After nearly 20 years as the Director of Winemaking for Stevenot Winery in Murphys in the famed Sierra Foothills of California, Chuck Hovey’s professional reputation for quality, consistency and excellence is a well established .

Chuck started his career at J Lohr Winery in San Jose, where he worked for six years. It was great on the job training.

Haven fallen in love with the Sierra Foothills on a quick visit through the area, Chuck was thrilled when he was offered a position at Stevenot Winery as Assistant Winemaker. Five years later in 1988, he was promoted to Director of Winemaking in charge of all production, and so began a Golden Age for Stevenot Winery. He brought the winery national recognition, receiving over 500 medals at major wine competitions and repeated favorable reviews in major publications and newspapers.

Over last two decades, Chuck, with his pioneering spirit, created some of the most impressive and innovative wines that the Sierra Foothills American Viticultural Area (AVA) has seen. He introduced such varietals as Tempranillo, Albarino and Verdelho into the mainstream market. Chuck's winemaking style and finesse is unmistakable – his passion is contagious.

The 2008 release of Chuck's 2007 Chardonnay marked the realization of a lifelong dream, one dedicated to producing the finest wines the Sierra has ever seen ... with the Hovey name on the bottle!

Chuck quickly added the Hovey Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, Barbera and Viognier. Production and sales doubled in less than a two year period. Since then, several other varietals have been added, including the Isabel Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Cinsaut, Sangiovese Rosato and the C2 White and Red blends. Winery growth and expansion continue upwards!

Chuck continues to be involved in the daily operations of the winery. He enjoys the long term relationships he has developed with the growers and looks to the future with new additions to the Hovey wine portfolio. Chuck feels that he has the ability to not only continue his winemaking legacy, but to surpass it. When you taste Hovey Wine, we are sure you’ll agree!

The Partners
In the Fall of 2015, as Chuck was recovering from his stroke, a group of friends got together to figure out how we could help Chuck and the winery. We pooled our talents and have jointly purchased an interest in Hovey Winery. With Chuck at the helm, we help make his vision a reality. We take an active role in business operations, production and marketing, but we leave the winemaking to the expert, Chuck.

12:00 PM - 04:00 PM Murphys Old Timers Museum Will Display "Cattle in the Sierras " Through April
Murphys, CA...Funded by a California Stories grant from California Humanities, the Murphys Old Timers Museum, has produced an exhibit on the long-established practice of transhumance in the California Foothills and Sierra Nevada. Since gold was discovered in California in the winter of 1848, cattle have roamed the foothills in winter and spring, summered in the rich grasslands of the Sierra Nevada, and returned to their lowland homes in the fall. This annual pattern (transhumance), with established ranches and farms in the lower elevations and summer camps and pasturages in the high mountain meadows, is rapidly disappearing. Threatened with the diminishing price of beef to producers, difficulties in transporting livestock to their summer ranges, and environmental regulations, this 160-year old California tradition may disappear in the near future. Proponents of grazing argue that this will result in loss of mountain meadows and ponds as well as lowland ranches with their grass ranges to residential sprawl. Some environmental and hiking groups contend that livestock grazing in the mountains has led to degradation of streams and native ecosystems. The exhibit, and a video, recount the stories of historic cattle ranching in the California foothills and its battle to stay alive in the face of current environmental and economic challenges, also addressing the effects of its continued operation on mountain ecosystems. Utilizing historical and current photographs and the installation of a 1911 high country cow camp, this exhibit argues that by working together to solve grazing issues, ranchers, the Forest Service, scientists, environmental groups, and the public can resolve their differences, resulting in a win-win for all. A 15-minute video, presenting both sides of the issue and a hope for reconciliation, is forthcoming.

The exhibit will be on display at the Murphys Old Timers Museum, 470 Main Street, Murphys Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 12 pm to 4 pm through April 29, 2018. Call for more info 728-1160.
