All Day The 22nd Annual Presidents’ Day Wine Weekend is February 17th & 18th
Murphys , CA...The 22nd annual Presidents’ Day Wine Weekend sponsored by the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance (CWA) will take place Saturday February 17th and Sunday February 18th. Presidents’ Wine Weekend is an opportunity for wine lovers to taste their way thru Calaveras County by purchasing a $25 commemorative glass and visiting over 28 participating wineries and tasting rooms while enjoying free limited-tasting flights of numerous award winning wines and exciting varietals offered by the best of Calaveras County’s wine community.

Full tastings will be available in each tasting room for an additional fee with many participating wineries and tasting rooms offering live music, light bites and food samples as well as special offers on wine purchases. Visitors to Calaveras County’s wine region will find plenty of warm welcomes and hospitable spirit within our tasting rooms as they welcome participants to this highly anticipated two-day event.

Presidents Wine Weekend is a great time to sample the variety of award winning wines, taste those robust Spanish and Italian regional varietals the foothills have become known for like Barbera, Tempranillo as well as Mourvedre and Grenache from France and some of the best Zinfandels and Cabernets produced in Gold Country. Even better, it gives you a chance to meet our winemakers, experience our welcoming hospitality, discover the history that surrounds the region and shop the myriad of specialty boutiques in the charming town of Murphys.

Purchase your glass anytime during this two-day event at a participating winery and begin your exploration. Glasses can be purchased for $25 per day or $40 for a two-day pass. You simply won't be able to taste at all the wineries in one day, so book your reservations now at one of our charming hospitality partners and plan on taking your time to experience all that Calaveras has to offer!

Glasses will be sold in Downtown Murphys on Main Street in front of Newsome Harlow Winery and in front of Black Sheep Winery as well as specific winery locations around Calaveras.

For visitors traveling up from the valley, stop off at Copperopolis Town Square and purchase you glass at The Tipsy Frog Wine Bar or Downtown Angels Camp at Metate Vineyards tasting room on Main Street. 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Old Timers Museum Walking Tours Are Every Saturday at 10am.
Murphys, CA...Each Saturday morning the Old Timers Museum in Murphys offers a historical walking tour of Murphys. No reservation necessary. Meet at the Museum, 470 Main St, Murphys, across from the Hotel 10 am. Walk is 1-1/12 hours.

A stroll down tree-lined Main Street transports visitors back to the mid-1800s with buildings bearing thick stone walls, iron shutters and pastoral gardens with white picket fences. Once you experience the charm and hospitality of Murphys, the historic “Queen of the Sierra”, you’ll want to come back again and again!

Rich in Gold Rush History, Murphys today is a vibrant, thriving community of over 2,000 residents. Many of the surrounding hillsides are rich with the fine wine grapes grown in our area. Murphys offers wineries, art galleries, live theater, eclectic shops, fine restaurants, charming hotels and B&B’s as well as a multitude of outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities.

Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. True entrepreneurs with the luck of the Irish, they were a part of the very first immigrant party – the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy families – to successfully bring wagons over the Sierra in 1844, paving the way for westward migration. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. It is reported that the brothers took two million dollars in gold ore from the Murphys Diggins in one year’s time, making them millionaires before the age of 25. The sizzling Gold Rush camp of Murphys also played host to President Grant, Mark Twain and Black Bart. And in some circles, to an even more famous chap – a young, inquisitive lad who literally changed the scientific world, Dr. Albert Michelson.

Our friendly residents invite you to revisit the past while exploring the “new” upscale Murphys. Guided walking tours of the town’s many historic buildings including the home of Albert Michelson, the first American Nobel Prize winner, are conducted every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., starting in front of the Old Timers Museum on Main Street.
