All Day Crossing California, Sierra to the Sea, October 8 through November 26 at Petroglyphe
Mokelumne Hill, CA...Crossing California, Sierra to the Sea, Dale Laitinen. Reception - Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 2-5 pm. Exhibition runs October 8 through November 26, 2017 At Petroglyphe Gallery 8317 Main Street, Mokelumne Hill Crossing California, Sierra to the Sea is a celebration of Dale Laitinen's favorite places seen while crisscrossing the great state of California.  Laitinen states, "Twenty years ago my wife and I chose Mountain Ranch, uprooting home, studio, family and pets to a beautiful place tucked away in Calaveras County.  The now infamous Butte Fire swept through our area and destroyed all that we had built for those years.  Crossing California is a rising from the ashes exhibit as a way of moving forward from catastrophe."

In this exhibition, Dale Laitinen has chosen a multi medium way of depicting varied landscapes, employing water media, acrylics, and oils. He states, “Although my theme remains constant, my technical use of mediums is as diverse as California. Expect scenes of Tahoe, Yosemite and other Northern California locales…but also be prepared for some surprises.”

When Laitinen returns home to Northern California after traveling, teaching, and observing all over the country and abroad, he sighs in appreciation for all that is offered in this magnificent area. This is easily detected in the predominant subject matter of his work.

Dale Laitinen is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. He is a past juror of many national and regional exhibitions including Watercolor West, Kentucky Watercolor Society, Utah Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Oregon, Red River Watermedia Show, Magnum Opus and numerous others. Some of the periodicals featuring him have been Southwest Art Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Watercolor Magazine, and Drawingboard Magazine.

Marisa Chaffey and Denise Ebbett, owners of Petroglyphe Gallery share, “It has been an honor to represent Dale Laitinen and his fine art since our opening in 2011.This exhibit is an opportunity for Mr. Laitinen to share his newest collection since the Butte Fire. We look forward to unveiling these stunning works, which showcase his talent for both Sierra landscapes and Coastal landscapes.”

Reception and Demonstration at Petroglyphe Gallery, Sunday, October 8, 2017, from 2-5pm. Watch artist Dale Laitinen at work and visit with him to learn more about his process and the inspiration behind his new collection.

Wine and cheese will be served. There will be a free drawing for a $50 Gift Certificate to the gallery.

06:00 PM - 08:00 PM Speakers Explore Today’s California Native American Experience
Columbia, CA...The Columbia College Foundation will host an enlightening look at the changes and challenges of today’s Native American experience Thursday, November 16. Speakers include author and ethnic studies professor Dr. Melissa Moreno of Woodland Community College, Carlos Giesdorf (Me-Wuk), Cultural Coordinator of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk, and Columbia College Counselor Stephanie Beaver (Hupa) who will moderate. The event, held during National Native American Heritage Month, will be held in the Dogwood Forum at Columbia College and is free to the public. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the evening’s program will run from 6:30-8:00pm.

The November 16 program continues a community lecture series hosted by the Columbia College Foundation in cooperation with college faculty and regional partners.

Beaver is the event organizer, and noted that perspectives of Native California people are important to invite and showcase, especially in a college setting. “This will give a missing voice and perspective in a larger public system,” Beaver said. “It’s great for natives and non-natives alike – it will help everyone gain formal academic knowledge and cultural insight they may not have had access to. It’s great for anyone who works with native people or has a desire to understand native history and present experiences. Who couldn’t benefit from that?”

“This is a chance to hear from and learn more about a vital part of our local culture, and to help bring light to their story and the history of California,” said Colette Such, Columbia College Foundation President. “The Foundation is pleased to help bring these speakers together for an enlightening and educational evening.”
