All Day Crossing California, Sierra to the Sea, October 8 through November 26 at Petroglyphe
Mokelumne Hill, CA...Crossing California, Sierra to the Sea, Dale Laitinen. Reception - Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 2-5 pm. Exhibition runs October 8 through November 26, 2017 At Petroglyphe Gallery 8317 Main Street, Mokelumne Hill Crossing California, Sierra to the Sea is a celebration of Dale Laitinen's favorite places seen while crisscrossing the great state of California.  Laitinen states, "Twenty years ago my wife and I chose Mountain Ranch, uprooting home, studio, family and pets to a beautiful place tucked away in Calaveras County.  The now infamous Butte Fire swept through our area and destroyed all that we had built for those years.  Crossing California is a rising from the ashes exhibit as a way of moving forward from catastrophe."

In this exhibition, Dale Laitinen has chosen a multi medium way of depicting varied landscapes, employing water media, acrylics, and oils. He states, “Although my theme remains constant, my technical use of mediums is as diverse as California. Expect scenes of Tahoe, Yosemite and other Northern California locales…but also be prepared for some surprises.”

When Laitinen returns home to Northern California after traveling, teaching, and observing all over the country and abroad, he sighs in appreciation for all that is offered in this magnificent area. This is easily detected in the predominant subject matter of his work.

Dale Laitinen is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. He is a past juror of many national and regional exhibitions including Watercolor West, Kentucky Watercolor Society, Utah Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Oregon, Red River Watermedia Show, Magnum Opus and numerous others. Some of the periodicals featuring him have been Southwest Art Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Watercolor Magazine, and Drawingboard Magazine.

Marisa Chaffey and Denise Ebbett, owners of Petroglyphe Gallery share, “It has been an honor to represent Dale Laitinen and his fine art since our opening in 2011.This exhibit is an opportunity for Mr. Laitinen to share his newest collection since the Butte Fire. We look forward to unveiling these stunning works, which showcase his talent for both Sierra landscapes and Coastal landscapes.”

Reception and Demonstration at Petroglyphe Gallery, Sunday, October 8, 2017, from 2-5pm. Watch artist Dale Laitinen at work and visit with him to learn more about his process and the inspiration behind his new collection.

Wine and cheese will be served. There will be a free drawing for a $50 Gift Certificate to the gallery.

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Keep the Bell Ringing at Murphys Historic Grammar School
Murphys, CA...We would like to invite everyone to come to the OPEN HOUSE of the Old School House in Murphys, Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 10 am to noon. We are interested in gathering any and all information that will help to enhance the building and continue sharing memories from former students, teachers and or residents.

Phase 1 of the restoration projected was completed in 2016. It included a new roof, new bell tower which houses the original bell. Phase 2 has just been completed and included a completely reconstructed rear addition with an ADA accessible entry and restroom, and a complete commercial quality kitchen. Next up is Phase 3 which will include a complete faithful historical restoration of the original main building.

With your support we can keep that bell ringing with a facility available for the entire community to use for special events like weddings, meetings, celebrations, anything. The facility has 2 rooms with an adjoining door, tables and chairs, restroom, an outside picnic area and a lit and paved parking lot.

Murphys Grammar School is a historic school building that overlooks the small community of Murphys, California. Built in 1860, it was the first public school in the small gold mining town. It was used as a school until 1973 when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It continued to educate children as a preschool until 2013 when it was closed for renovation. At that time, it was the longest continuously running school house west of the Mississippi River.

Designed in a vernacular Greek Revival style which was popular at the time of its construction; its design includes a cornice held up by square pilasters a pedimented gable, and a cupola over the entrance with its own cornice and square pilasters. The inside of the building has had no significant changes and has two rooms. The chalkboards are original and are made of slate; as well as the original pine board floors. The thirty by eighty foot building cost $4000 to build and was constructed by work contributed by local residents on land donated by Dr. Jones. Originally there were no trees on the hill, so the school board transplanted a number of pines that still shade the surrounding grounds; which prompted the students to sometimes refer to it as Pine Grove College. It is located on 1.8 acres on Jones Street.
