All Day Murphys Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Grape Stomp Competition!
Murphys, CA...Stomp competition, costume contests, and street fair brings thousands of people to historic Downtown Murphys for a day of fun and entertainment for all the first Saturday in October! Crowds of over 5,000 people from near and far flood the little town of Murphys, to celebrate the beginning of the wine harvest season. Murphys puts on a lively stomp competition. This exciting all-day event happens on the first Saturday in October every year, and includes the Gold Rush Street Fair lining Main Street with over 100 outside vendors. Now in its 25th year, the annual community Grape Stomp has grown to include over 120 teams vying to be known as “Champion of the Juice” or winner of the “Best Costume” award. Come witness the Largest and Oldest Grape Stomp Competition in California!

During the stomp, teams of two, many with creative names and costumes, compete to collect the most juice out of 25 pounds of grapes in three-minute heats. Teams consist of a “stomper,” who stands in half a wine barrel with the grapes, and a “swabber, or mucker” who stands outside the barrel and reaches in to help flow the juice out of a drain spout.

Teams are encouraged to appear in costume and prizes are awarded based on originality, design and effort. Previous winners include the “Mucker Truckers“, “Grapeful Dead” and the “Cork Fungus Fairies”. The most anticipated heat of the day is the Winemakers Heat where local winemakers come out to compete in a friendly rivalry for most juice stomped and the Presidents Cup. Competitions are highly encouraged between businesses, sponsors, organizations and friends and pre-registration is strongly recommended as stomp competitions sell out well before the event.

Quality arts and crafts, antiques, handcrafted goods, jewelry, clothing, collectibles and food booths offer wares for sale in addition to Murphys’ multitude of one-of-a-kind specialty shops, restaurants and tasting rooms that line Main Street.

In addition, the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance holds a silent and live auction that includes donations from local and regional supporters such as Bear Valley Ski Resort, Saddlecreek Golf Resort, Murphys Historic Hotel and wine and winemaker event tickets from local wineries. All proceeds from the silent and live auction are distributed back to local community organizations and help fund the CWA scholarship funds.

Attending the 25th Annual Grape Stomp Competition and Gold Rush Street Fair is free to the public and the event runs from 9:30am – 5pm on Saturday October 6th. For more info and to register visit https://goo.gl/1LYf7y (shortened link)

Calaveras Grape Stomp Celebrates 25th Anniversary
October 6, 2018, Murphys Park, Murphys, CA
9:30 – 5:00

STOMP TEAM RESERVATIONS OPEN !

Interested in being part of the 25th Calaveras Grape Stomp history? Call now 209/754-0127 or visit www.calaveraswines.org to reserve your team and celebrate one of the most anticipated events in the region, drawing large, loud crowds and scores of stomp teams, many festooned in original costume. If coming in costume, you must register in costume but you need not stomp in costume. Costumes are judged on originality, workmanship, etc. Registration entry fee is $70 per team of two.

Stomp goers will witness another fierce competition between teams vying for the title of the Calaveras Grape Stomp Champion. Stomp Teams are composed of two persons, one inside a half barrel filled with 25 pounds of grapes, another outside the barrel reaching in to ensure a smooth flow of juice out the drain spot. It's a sticky business for all concerned.

The results are weighed and heat winners and wildcard teams advance to the championship rounds.

The Winery Stomp will be held at 11:00. This is your chance to see Wineries compete for the President's Trophy.

This year, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Stomp, we’re introducing the Community Stomp-A-Thon as a new way for local organization to benefit from this wildly popular event.
How it works:
The Grape Stomp will dedicate the 12the Heat of the event, which starts at 3:00, to the Community Stomp-A-Thon. Similar to walk-a-thons, participating organizations will enter a team in the 12th Heat, The Stomp -A-Thon, and solicit pledges from their supporters and the general public to contribute some amount of cash per ounce stomped by their team

At the same time the Calaveras Grape Stomp is on, the Gold Rush Street Faire is happening, with over 100 quality vendors of all sorts stretching from one end of Main Street to the other. Food, art, crafts, knick-knacks of every description – it will all be there.

Make plans now to visit Murphys this October 6 and be there for all the fun, excitement, food, wine, and a great silent auction this year.

For more information call the 209/754-0127 or log on to www.calaveraswines.

Murphys, CA...Each Saturday morning the Old Timers Museum in Murphys offers a historical walking tour of Murphys. No reservation necessary. Meet at the Museum, 470 Main St, Murphys, across from the Hotel 10 am. Walk is 1-1/12 hours.

A stroll down tree-lined Main Street transports visitors back to the mid-1800s with buildings bearing thick stone walls, iron shutters and pastoral gardens with white picket fences. Once you experience the charm and hospitality of Murphys, the historic “Queen of the Sierra”, you’ll want to come back again and again!

Rich in Gold Rush History, Murphys today is a vibrant, thriving community of over 2,000 residents. Many of the surrounding hillsides are rich with the fine wine grapes grown in our area. Murphys offers wineries, art galleries, live theater, eclectic shops, fine restaurants, charming hotels and B&B’s as well as a multitude of outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities.

Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. True entrepreneurs with the luck of the Irish, they were a part of the very first immigrant party – the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy families – to successfully bring wagons over the Sierra in 1844, paving the way for westward migration. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. It is reported that the brothers took two million dollars in gold ore from the Murphys Diggins in one year’s time, making them millionaires before the age of 25. The sizzling Gold Rush camp of Murphys also played host to President Grant, Mark Twain and Black Bart. And in some circles, to an even more famous chap – a young, inquisitive lad who literally changed the scientific world, Dr. Albert Michelson.

Our friendly residents invite you to revisit the past while exploring the “new” upscale Murphys. Guided walking tours of the town’s many historic buildings including the home of Albert Michelson, the first American Nobel Prize winner, are conducted every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., starting in front of the Old Timers Museum on Main Street.
