Murphys, CA...Independent Mercantile will be hosting our 2nd of 5 artist receptions of the summer at our Main St. store, the ND&X, July 14th. This reception will feature the work of another local favorite Thea Schoettgen. Thea finds beauty and inspiration in the panoramic views that surround her home in Bear Valley, CA and in those bright little moments whose compositions grab her attention. Finding inspiration in the near and far is her passion.

Thea primarily paints with acrylic paints on canvas, and loves the way acrylic paints dry quickly allowing layers of colors to be built. Working from her own photographs taken while skiing, hiking, mountain biking and mucking about she is able to bring her vision to all of us. She considers herself a studio painter who always has water filled brushes and watercolor paints and paper kits nearby or in a backpack. Please join us for a lovely evening celebrating Thea and her work. Wine by Boyle MacDonald and nibbles will be provided.

Bio

Declaring oneself “The Optimist” is a bold move, especially on an album with as many songs of murder, heartache, and South American gunslinging as Grover Anderson’s 2014 release. Even interweaved with the songs about growing old together or how much fun it is being the big spoon, there’s always a thorn or two hidden somewhere in the lenses of Grover’s rose-colored glasses. A long-held belief that the darkness leads us to appreciate the light permeates his songwriting and informs his mission to celebrate life in all its ups and downs through songwriting and performance.

Grover was raised in the historic gold rush town of Murphys, CA. The rich culture of the area (along with lifelong immersion in fiction, theater and 90’s country music) instilled a storytelling nature that is evident in Grover’s writing. He assembled a bar band while attending UC Santa Barbara, put all of the tips from his restaurant job into a jar, and used it to record a pop/rock album.

After some layovers in LA and Oakland, where he formed the folk duo Freight with Jimbo Scott, Grover and his family returned to Murphys to reconnect with the small mountain atmosphere that provided such inspiration as a youth. Living in California’s vastly varying environments provided ample material for his next two albums, which Grover self-produced. “Moonshine”, the opening track on the mostly-acoustic Tourniquet (2011), has grown into a fan favorite since its original recording as a duet with LA artist Samantha Free. While recording The Optimist (2014), which includes love songs like “Little Spoon” and “Sick of You” and more tragic ballads “The Lampolier” and “Grindstone“, Grover assembled the musicians from all over the state to create a diverse collection of country, rock, bluegrass, and jazz.  His 2017 acoustic album, From the Pink Room, is a collection of songs that Grover recorded at his home studio deep in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and was named the #2 album of the year by music site Independent Clauses.

While he loves sharing his recorded music (he currently has over 1.7 million streams on Spotify), Grover’s true passion is live performance. Whether performing solo with his acoustic guitar or with the full band behind him, he channels musical heroes like Garth Brooks and Josh Ritter, leaving everything he has on stage. He is a passionate performer who grows his fanbase with every gig, be it for a wine bar of thirty or an amphitheater of thousands.

07:30 PM Live Music on the Deck with The Cabby Band at Sequoia Woods
Arnold, CA...Saturday we're having live music on the deck with The Cabby Band. Sunday back to regular operations...

You’ve dreamed about it ... un-crowded, serene, clean air; mild summers, blue skies and a challenging golf course nestled among native evergreens.

Sequoia Woods Country Club is located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, roughly between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, at an elevation of 4000 feet. The club house is open to the public, with a bar and lounge, dining room and seasonal deli. The beautiful setting can be enjoyed from indoors or outside on the deck, with a view down the main tree-lined golf fairway.

The bar serves food several evenings each week and the restaurant is open for dinner every weekend. The dinner menu has a perfect variety of traditional favorites, with creative and contemporary preparations, and our guests marvel at the quality of cuisine to be found here, in this little mountain hamlet.

There is dancing in the lounge every Saturday night, with a DJ or frequent live bands. The deli opens its windows to the deck for an extended summer season, with tasty sandwiches, salads and hot specials. Special group events find our venue especially accommodating and fun.

This is a truly lovely place to enjoy good food, good friends and good scenery.

The Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride has long since established himself as roots royalty, revered for both his solo and sideman work, which includes time with Harris, Lyle Lovett, and Béla Fleck. But instead of kicking back and soaking up honors such as an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award and suite of Grammys and International Bluegrass Music Association trophies, Bush still strives relentlessly to create something new.

Raised on a farm just outside of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Bush grew up plowing tobacco fields in the Southern summer heat alongside his family. He started playing mandolin when he was 11 years old. “I believe growing up on a farm probably helped me channel my energy into learning music and being so interested in it,” Bush says. “Me and my sisters, we all loved it. I’ve often wondered if that’s because growing up on a farm, you couldn’t go ride your bike all over town and horse around like the other kids.”

For Bush, a lifetime of channeling his energy has led to stylistic innovations that have changed the course of bluegrass and roots music alike.

Sam Bush has been awarded a Grammy for...

Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal with Emmylou Harris & Nash Ramblers on Emmylou Harris & the Nash Ramblers in 1992.
Best Pop Instrumental Performance with Béla Fleck & The Flecktones on The Sinister Minister in 1996.
Album of the Year with various artists such as Alison Krauss & Union Station, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Ralph Stanley, and Tim Blake Nelson for O Brother, Where Art Thou in 2001.
