Arnold, CA...We're back for another great race! Join us in this one-mile race that occurs immediately before the Arnold Independence Day parade and celebrate July 4th mountain style! This is a fundraiser for Hazel Fischer Elementary School's Parents Club, and all ages are welcome to participate. How fast can you run a mile?

Once an Arnold Independence Day Parade tradition, the Firecracker Mile is a mile race that kicks off the Independence Day parade, beginning at the Arnold Byway and ending at Cedar Center. It's a great way to participate in the parade if you're not already on a float, and we hope you'll join us as we promote fitness and raise money for Hazel Fischer Elementary Parents Club.

Registration will be $5 for ages 4 and under ($10 after June 21), $10 for everyone else ($15 after June 21). Minors must be registered by a parent or guardian. Sorry but there will be no refunds if you cannot race. Runners and walkers have three opportunities to register: (1) online through July 5, (2) in person from 4 - 6 pm July 6 at Big Trees Market, or (3) in person the morning of the race. All participants registered before June 22 will be guaranteed their preferred t-shirt size. All other participants will be given shirts on a first come, first served basis, so it is to your benefit to register early.

Big Trees Fitness has offered to let anyone who participates in the Firecracker Mile swim free on race weekend (July 7 or 8). Simply show your race tshirt and you get to swim!

The charming town of Arnold is one of the Sierra’s best kept secrets. Located on California’s Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway, the area is a wonderland of outdoor activity and watersports. Because of its elevation, you can play in the snow at Bear Valley in the morning and hike or play golf in the afternoon during Autumn and Spring.

For hikers, bikers and equestrians, the Arnold Rim Trail features more than a dozen miles of pathways along forested creeks and breathtaking ridgetop vistas with panoramic views. For those who want to take it easier, visit White Pines Park or the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum, find something special in one of several charming gift shops or go wine tasting at dozens of local wineries.

Arnold is home to Calaveras Big Trees State Park, where the continent’s biggest trees grow. Featuring giant Sequoias over 300’ tall and 30’ in diameter, the park has both wheelchair-accessible paths and rugged trails among thousands of enormous redwoods, cedars and pines. The park flanks the Stanlislaus River with terrific fishing and swimming, too.

A round-trip from the bay area is 2½ hours closer than Tahoe or Yosemite – close enough for a day trip – yet there’s so many fun family activities that you’ll want to spend a night or two. Everything you’ll need is here in town, so hop in the car, leave the traffic behind and come to Arnold, the heart of the Sierra.

"Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ resolves that we are an Open and Affirming congregation whose primary purpose is to proclaim and extend God's extravagant welcome to all people. We welcome and accept all people regardless of race, sex, nationality, physical disability, marital status, mental ability, economic status, or sexual orientation. We believe Jesus' teaching that the greatest commandents are to love God with all our hearts, souls and minds, and to love our neighbors as ourselves."

We are a small but active and growing congregation, having added 16 new members in 2015 with more to come. The congregation is a self governing, self supporting and independent faith community, with a strong bond of Christian covenant and mission throughout the various settings of the United Church of Christ: local, regional, national and international.
We are called to live in God's grace and goodness. You are joyfully invited to join us in this covenant of life.

We are reminded that "God is still speaking". This means that God still has a lot more to say. The red comma that we use proclaims that our faith is 2000 years old but our thinking is not.

Union Congregational Church, UCC is served by an ordained minister, Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Armstrong who is assisted by a very capable minister of music and by a volunteer treasurer and office staff.
