05:30 PM (Starts Tonight in Valley Springs) Calaveras County Arts Council Brings New Dates, New Venues, New B
San Andreas, CA...This summer the Calaveras County Arts Council will shake, rattle and roll summer nights with four new dates and two new venues for their signature admission-free Music in the Parks concert series. In 2019 the Council is shifting four of their weekly concerts to Friday nights—June 14, 21 and August 16 and 23. Wednesday nights—From June 26 to August 7—will ring with music. The time is still the same—6:30 to 8 p.m.—for all concerts. Also new this year: An art table at each concert, where kids of all ages can enjoy a different art experience each week, free of charge, while they listen to music.

While the traditional Wednesday night concerts have been popular, according to Executive Director Kathy Mazzaferro, “after much discussion, the board of directors decided that Music in the Parks would benefit from changing it up. Having looked at our programs for more than 25 years, we wondered, would Friday nights be more fun? Are there new venues we might want to explore? The only way to find out is to take a leap of faith and jump in with four Friday nights of music this summer.”

“We are particularly excited about our new venue in Valley Springs at the Observation Point Picnic Shelter at New Hogan Reservoir Outlook. It’s such a beautiful venue overlooking the lake. And this particular year the lake is full.” It’s a perfect spot for a Friday night concert (June 14), and the Sky Kings will fill the landscape with their blend of clear vocal harmonies and lush instrumentations that includes a horn section, pedal steel, and a world class rhythm section. They pay tribute to the early California country/rock scene with songs from artists like CSN, The Byrds, and Jackson Browne. But they’re not just a cover band; they blend original material seamlessly into their show. On Friday night, June 14th, you can let the kids play in the onsite playground while you relax and watch the night come up over the lake and sing along to the Sky Kings.

On Friday June 21, the sounds of Brazilian choro music by the new band Sambossa will transport you to the Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro—actually, Brice Station Vineyards above Murphys—with their soft melodic jazz with a compelling beat. A blend of European music and Afro-Brazilian percussion, it’s reminiscent of tango, bossa nova, and samba music; choro took the 19th century by storm and has never grown old. No offsite alcohol is allowed, but there will be wine and beer for sale and desserts from Red Apple to round out your picnic.

On Wednesday, June 26, Utica Park in Angels Camp will rock with local singer Brian Jirka and the Cabby Band. The band performs a mixture of soul, blues, rock, funk and even a pinch of reggae and country. On Wednesday June 10, the Stompbox Band will punch a hole in the air at Shutter Tree Park in Mokelumne Hill with covers people love to dance to. The Moke Hill Lions Club will be serving pie and ice cream so you can keep your energy up. If you haven’t heard the band’s powerhouse lead vocalist Kerry Tweedy belt out song after song, then you’re in for a treat. Hold on to your hair!

The next concert is on Wednesday July 17 at the Mountain Ranch Community Park. The Kool Shifters Band has a dance tune for everyone, and they’ll be playing 60s, 70s and 80s rhythm and blues and rock as well as country, and swing. Come early to this concert and enjoy a chicken barbecue dinner to help out the Mountain Ranch Youth Alliance; bring a donation of canned food or other shelf-stable donation for the food pantry in exchange for a free dessert.

On Wednesday July 24 Rail Road Flat enjoys the Random Strangers’ blend of classic country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues—a genre they call Rocking Americana. They deliver dynamite picking, smooth harmonies, blistering ballads, and foot stomping romps. The site is an elementary school, so it’s a zero-tolerance zone; no alcohol or drugs are allowed.

Last year the San Andreas concert moved into the town hall to escape the heat and the smoke. Everyone enjoyed it so much that the Arts Council is going to do it again this year on Wednesday July 31. Jana & Leroy will cool the air even more with their chill jazz, sultry blues, and bright pop music.

On Wednesday August 7, Michaela Macfarlane and Cantamos plays world music at Murphys Community park. It’s hard to pin them to any one genre; the band shifts seamlessly across the world music landscape, playing 1960s kitsch like These Boots Are Made For Walking (in French!) as well as rollicking Aretha Franklin covers.

When you take Celtic, Spanish, and Italian Music, and mix it up, you get the true nature of the Black Irish Band. They’ll play their upbeat brand of traditional and original folk music on Friday August 16 at Copperopolis (now known as The Square at Copper Valley).

Music in the Parks will close out summer in Arnold at Cedar Center on Friday August 23 with The Fixins, an up-and-coming Americana jam band based out of San Francisco that plays an original mix of folk, funk, roots, and blues music. They’ve been lighting up the Bay Area music scene with electrifying sets that capture the energy of the 60s and 70s rock and folk scenes. It’s just the way to turn down the lights on summer and welcome in fall.
08:00 PM - 10:00 PM Alejandro Escovedo with special guest – An evening of passionate rock at the Sutter Creek Theatre
Alejandro Escovedo with special guest – An evening of passionate rock - at the Sutter Creek Theatre
A celebrated singer and songwriter, Alejandro Escovedo has as eclectic a background and body of work as any rock artist of his generation. As comfortable performing with a string ensemble as he is with an amped-up power trio, and as likely to bare his soul in his lyrics as he is to lay out some serious rock & roll swagger, Escovedo had already played an important role in punk (with the Nuns), roots rock (the True Believers), and alt-country (Rank & File) before he launched a solo career that’s seen him work with everyone from John Cale to Bruce Springsteen. Beginning with 1992’s Gravity, Escovedo’s music has been literate, ambitious, and eclectic, with many of his best albums — 1996’s With These Hands, 2001’s A Man Under the Influence, and 2006’s The Boxing Mirror — exploring different genres and approaches from track to track, while his albums with producers Tony Visconti (2008’s Real Animal, 2010’s Street Songs of Love) and Peter Buck & Scott McCaughey (2016’s Burn Something Beautiful) helped him focus on passionate, guitar-based rock & roll.
The son of Mexican immigrants to Texas, Escovedo is from a family that includes several professional musicians, including his brothers (and percussionists) Coke Escovedo and Pete Escovedo, and Sheila E. (Pete’s daughter and Alejandro’s niece). Alejandro’s brother Mario fronted the hard rock band the Dragons, and another brother, Javier, was in the punk rock band the Zeros.
A recent tour of Europe found Escovedo sharing stages with the Italian rock band Don Antonio, and Escovedo struck up a friendship with the group’s leader, Antonio Gramentiere. The two collaborated on a set of songs about two young men — one from Italy, one from Mexico — who come to America to follow their dreams. Escovedo recorded the songs on his 2018 album The Crossing; Don Antonio served as his backing band for the sessions, with guest appearances from Wayne Kramer of the MC5, James Williamson of Iggy and the Stooges, and Peter Perrett of the Only Ones.
Crossing borders, jumping barriers, taking risks, betting it all: that’s the path Alejandro Escovedo has been taking in his lifelong search for the heart of rock and roll. His newest album, an epic 17 song suite “The Crossing” is about that journey: searching, but not necessarily finding, eyes and ears open all the way. Ranging from sweeping orchestral numbers to classic rock to bursts of 70s punk, the collection finds Escovedo delving further into his lifelong musical journey across his most sonically diverse work yet.
Escovedo appears with his full band and a special guest!
The historic Sutter Creek Theatre is an intimate 215 seat former silent film theatre with superb sound. Beer and wine at the venue. Tickets and video at the web site www.suttercreektheatre.com
