08:00 AM Off The Beaten Path 10K/5K Run/Walk to Raise Funds for Mind Matters Clinic
Murphys, CA...Competitive runners, and people who just enjoy a stroll in the verdant countryside, are invited to take part in the 6th annual Off the Beaten Path, Walk/Run for Autism Awareness on Saturday, April 22 in Murphys Community Park. The money raised will go to support Mind Matters, the Murphys based non-profit clinic that treats Autism and other learning disorders.

The multi-faceted event will feature a 10K run, open to men and women of all ages, that will take participants down Six Mile Road past Ironstone Vineyards. Medallions will be awarded to the women and men with the fastest times in four age categories, 19 and younger, 20 to 39, 40 to 59, and 60 and over. There will also be a non-competitive 5K run.

Participants who would rather walk and chat than run are welcome to do so. In years past, many walkers have brought their well-behaved dogs to also enjoy the experience. The animals may participate without charge.

Check-in time will start at 8 a.m. At 8:45, Dr. Ryan Thompson, Mind Matters founder and Medical Director, and the clinic’s Executive Director Trudy Lackey, will welcome everyone and describe what the clinic has to offer. Following a warm-up session, conducted by Kat Juarez, the 10K race will begin at 9 a.m. followed immediately by the 5k run and walk.

David Bowman will be the emcee for the day, including the 10:30 a.m. award ceremony, and DJ Rick Lyons will provide the festive music. The event will end at 11 a.m.

The entry fee for all participants 8 and older is $30. Younger girls and boys can take part without charge. The first 100 paid registrants will be given an Off the Beaten Path t-shirt.

Entry blanks are available at the Mind Matters office, 150 Big Trees Rd. in Murphys. Runners and walkers may register on Facebook, online at the clinic website www.mindmattersclinic.org. or by calling 728-2184. Participants may also register at the event.

El Dorado Savings Bank is the Off the Beaten Path major sponsor.

Mind Matters exists to help individuals and families cope with the consequences of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD), and Learning Disabilities. The clinic does it through treatment, counseling, and education. It also strives to promote a better public understanding of these debilitating health issues. Mind Matters is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and donations to help extend its services are always welcome.

10:00 AM - 02:00 PM Amador FlyFishers Hosting Free Fly Fishing Faire April 22
Jackson, CA...Amador FlyFishers (AFF) will be hosting a free Fly Fishing Faire Sunday, April 22, from 10am to 2pm at Detert Park, 530 Highway 49, Jackson, California. There will be booths with club members demonstrating the use of the tools of the sport and answering questions to help attendees learn more about the wonderful sport of flyfishing. There will also be hands-on activities. Most importantly, AFF will be highlighting its Youth Program which targets junior high and high school age kids and provides good hands-on flyfishing classes.

AFF is a family oriented fly fishing club based in Jackson that was started in 1991. Many family oriented events are planned each year, including fishing outings near and not too far, a potluck dinner each August, and a sit-down dinner in the winter months. There are monthly club meetings that feature presentation by flyfishing experts from northern California and Nevada.

AFF members fish rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, the delta and even salt water. Flyfishing has something for just about everyone’s tastes in fishing.

Come out and meet AFF members and learn what flyfishing is all about! To get more information about the Fly Fishing Faire and other club activities, visit www.amadorflyfishers.org. There are links to AFF’s Facebook page and Meet-up.
03:00 PM Celebrate Spring Aboard Railtown 1897’s Popular & Fun Wildflower Train
Jamestown, CA...Tickets on Sale Now for Two Weekends Only: April 21, 22, 28 & 29. With spring in full bloom, California State Parks, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation are proud to provide guests with a unique opportunity to experience spring wildflowers from aboard a train. While the Park is open daily, special Wildflower Train Rides are available on two weekends – April 21, 22, 28 & 29 – and depart from the Depot promptly at 3 p.m. Prior to boarding the train, passengers will have the opportunity to learn about the wildflowers of California’s Sierra Nevada foothills with an informative naturalist presentation at 2:30 p.m.

Railtown 1897 SHP’s popular Wildflower Trains feature naturalists and Interpretive Park Rangers from the nearby Bureau of Reclamation’s New Melones Lake along with interpretive staff from Railtown 1897 SHP, answering questions and pointing out flower groupings along the way. Wildflower Trains take guests on a six-mile, one-hour roundtrip ride through the scenic landscapes of California’s Gold Country. While the abundance of wildflower viewing is dependent on annual rainfall and weather conditions, trains encounter meadows and rolling hills, with such local flora as “meadowfoam,” “goldfields” and other colorful flowers typically in bloom. Train ride guests receive a checklist, wildflower booklet and poppyseed packet, and more. Plus, guests have the opportunity to participate in a fun, wildflower-related raffle.

Wildflower or excursion train ride tickets cost $20 for adults, $14 for youth ages 6-17 and children five and under ride free. With limited open air seating available, train ride tickets are available online at www.railtown1897.org and at the ticket window beginning at 10 a.m. on the day of the ride (based on availability). Tickets include Park admission, capacity is limited, and advance reservations are suggested.

In addition to the special Wildflower Trains in the afternoon, Railtown 1897’s regular excursion trains are operating on these four dates with departures at 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. Regular weekend excursion ride tickets are available online or at the Depot Store, on a first-come, first-served basis. All regular weekend excursion train ride tickets include Park admission and cost $15 for adults, $10 for youth ages 6-17 and are free for children five and under.
