Fellow Trout Enthusiasts,

I decided to start The Trout Spot while working for the same company for 23 years. My friends, fishing buddies and co-workers always talked about finding a way to fish more and work less. In those years I fished a lot of waters, but always had the need for more I was, and still am on the hunt for the elusive Walter, that trout that rips your reel to the backing and burns the palm of your hand. I truly feel that the best thing in life one can experience is to feel the pull of a trout on the end of your line. There's no thrill like that first tug in the morning to wake you up and take the chill off your bones, or to see that flash as the fish jumps from the water, or the explosion of a big trout taking a bug off the top. I know being a small business owner is a ton of work, and will probably take more effort than working a full time job, but I also know that it will get me one step closer to fishing. If I get one more hour a week to hunt Big Old Walter, it will be worth it. At The Trout Spot, we will strive to give our customers a quality product for a fair price and to provide a friendly attitude in our business. So please help support this poor fisherman on his quest for the big one. A Clear Stream and Fish On!

Thanks for shopping with us!

12:00 PM - 04:00 PM Murphys Old Timers Museum Will Display "Cattle in the Sierras " Through April
Murphys, CA...Funded by a California Stories grant from California Humanities, the Murphys Old Timers Museum, has produced an exhibit on the long-established practice of transhumance in the California Foothills and Sierra Nevada. Since gold was discovered in California in the winter of 1848, cattle have roamed the foothills in winter and spring, summered in the rich grasslands of the Sierra Nevada, and returned to their lowland homes in the fall. This annual pattern (transhumance), with established ranches and farms in the lower elevations and summer camps and pasturages in the high mountain meadows, is rapidly disappearing. Threatened with the diminishing price of beef to producers, difficulties in transporting livestock to their summer ranges, and environmental regulations, this 160-year old California tradition may disappear in the near future. Proponents of grazing argue that this will result in loss of mountain meadows and ponds as well as lowland ranches with their grass ranges to residential sprawl. Some environmental and hiking groups contend that livestock grazing in the mountains has led to degradation of streams and native ecosystems. The exhibit, and a video, recount the stories of historic cattle ranching in the California foothills and its battle to stay alive in the face of current environmental and economic challenges, also addressing the effects of its continued operation on mountain ecosystems. Utilizing historical and current photographs and the installation of a 1911 high country cow camp, this exhibit argues that by working together to solve grazing issues, ranchers, the Forest Service, scientists, environmental groups, and the public can resolve their differences, resulting in a win-win for all. A 15-minute video, presenting both sides of the issue and a hope for reconciliation, is forthcoming.

The exhibit will be on display at the Murphys Old Timers Museum, 470 Main Street, Murphys Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 12 pm to 4 pm through April 29, 2018. Call for more info 728-1160.

01:00 PM The Arnold Library Presents an Afternoon with Robin Burcell, Novelist & Clive Cussler Co-Author
Arnold, CA...On Saturday, April 21, 2018 The Arnold Library Presents Novelist and Clive Cussler co-author from 1-3pm at the Ebbetts Pass Fire District Meeting Room.  Robin Burcell spent nearly three decades working in law enforcement as a police officer, hostage negotiator, criminal investigator and FBI Academy-trained forensic artist.  Burcell currently co-writes with international best-selling author Clive Cussler on the Fargo series. Pirate, their first co-written book, was released in 2016. The Romanov Ransom, next in that series, will be out September 12, 2017.

What you might not know about Robin

Burcell was the first female officer for her department. Her badge read "Policeman" and her locker room was actually a converted storeroom. While she'd always wanted to be a writer, her childhood dream was to be an Olympic ice skater. Unfortunately she didn't seriously start skating until her early twenties and by then it was too late. That hobby, however, was instrumental in allowing her to easily pass the physical agility test to get into the police academy.

Burcell has appeared on several true-crime television episodes as a commentator and even did a "forensic" sketch from a witness's description of "Baby Big Foot" for the Icon Films television series, Bigfoot Files, which appeared on BBC and Bigfoot: The New Evidence, which appeared in the U.S. on the National Geographic channel.

What you might not know about her books

Every book in her first police procedural series starring San Francisco Police homicide inspector Kate Gillespie was nominated for the Anthony Award (with two winners), two were nominated for Barry's (with one win), and one for the Macavity.

The first book in her second series, Face of a Killer, starring Sydney Fitzpatrick, FBI agent and forensic artist, received a starred review from Library Journal. The fifth book in that series, The Kill Order, was named by Library Journal as one of the best thrillers of 2014.

The Last Good Place, released November 2015, is a continuation of the 1970s series by the late Carolyn Weston, whose novels were used as the base for the hit television show The Streets of San Francisco.
03:00 PM Celebrate Spring Aboard Railtown 1897’s Popular & Fun Wildflower Train
Jamestown, CA...Tickets on Sale Now for Two Weekends Only: April 21, 22, 28 & 29. With spring in full bloom, California State Parks, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation are proud to provide guests with a unique opportunity to experience spring wildflowers from aboard a train. While the Park is open daily, special Wildflower Train Rides are available on two weekends – April 21, 22, 28 & 29 – and depart from the Depot promptly at 3 p.m. Prior to boarding the train, passengers will have the opportunity to learn about the wildflowers of California’s Sierra Nevada foothills with an informative naturalist presentation at 2:30 p.m.

Railtown 1897 SHP’s popular Wildflower Trains feature naturalists and Interpretive Park Rangers from the nearby Bureau of Reclamation’s New Melones Lake along with interpretive staff from Railtown 1897 SHP, answering questions and pointing out flower groupings along the way. Wildflower Trains take guests on a six-mile, one-hour roundtrip ride through the scenic landscapes of California’s Gold Country. While the abundance of wildflower viewing is dependent on annual rainfall and weather conditions, trains encounter meadows and rolling hills, with such local flora as “meadowfoam,” “goldfields” and other colorful flowers typically in bloom. Train ride guests receive a checklist, wildflower booklet and poppyseed packet, and more. Plus, guests have the opportunity to participate in a fun, wildflower-related raffle.

Wildflower or excursion train ride tickets cost $20 for adults, $14 for youth ages 6-17 and children five and under ride free. With limited open air seating available, train ride tickets are available online at www.railtown1897.org and at the ticket window beginning at 10 a.m. on the day of the ride (based on availability). Tickets include Park admission, capacity is limited, and advance reservations are suggested.

In addition to the special Wildflower Trains in the afternoon, Railtown 1897’s regular excursion trains are operating on these four dates with departures at 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. Regular weekend excursion ride tickets are available online or at the Depot Store, on a first-come, first-served basis. All regular weekend excursion train ride tickets include Park admission and cost $15 for adults, $10 for youth ages 6-17 and are free for children five and under.
