Performance Based Building...Quality You Can Test ~By John Hamilton
Angels Camp, CA...We had the pleasure to spend a few minutes talking with Local Contractor, Tom Danielsen and Andy Wahl of New World Management yesterday on a twist they are bringing to Construction. Tom uses Andy's services to actually test the efficiency and livability of a home. Using infrared cameras, pressure testing and other techniques they can verify the improvements they make. Sometimes they can raise the efficiency of a home 50% or more. We found it fascinating and very informative. Enclosed is a very nice video interview and also an additional press release from Danielson Fine Homes on their business...
Tom Danielsen of Danielsen Fine Homes, a home builder and home performance contractor in Angels Camp, CA, recently completed two homes in Dorrington (Arnold), incorporating home energy efficiency upgrades. Tom has 20+ years experience in the fields of general contracting, HVAC fabrication and installation, and whole house performance. He is a member of the California Building Performance Contractors Association (“CBPCA”), and is a “Home Performance with Energy Star” contractor.
After completing work on these homes, Tom asked Andy Wahl of New World Management, located in the San Francisco East Bay Area (also a member and certified trainer of the California Building Performance Contractors Association), www.cbpca.org/homeowners to be his third-party tester of these homes to quantify and document his work and results for the homeowners.
The energy efficient upgrades Tom’s company placed in these homes were designed to: increase the comfort (consistent temperature throughout the home); decrease energy waste through well-designed heating and cooling systems; and conserve energy through properly installed insulation and home sealing techniques. All of these systems contribute to lowering energy bills for the homeowner, while increasing the home’s comfort and safety.
On December 16th, New World Management came to Calaveras County to assess Danielsen Fine Homes’ projects, utilizing such tests as: blower door home leakage, infrared imaging, HVAC leakage and performance, and combustion safety tests. The results were very positive. Andy Wahl, when asked about the techniques implemented by Danielsen Fine Homes, said, “These homes are some of the best performing homes I’ve ever tested”. New World Management has evaluated over 5,000 homes in the United States over the past ten years.
Tom Danielsen of Danielsen Fine Homes, had this to say about his philosophy of construction and energy management: “You must look at the whole house as a system. All components in the home, such as the insulation, HVAC, air-sealing, ventilation, must work together to create synergy; thereby enabling the homeowner to realize energy savings, comfort and safety.”
Tom’s latest project is a home in Greenhorn Creek. On December 17th, Andy Wahl performed a home test on this home to assess its level of efficiency. It rated poorly, creating opportunities for energy upgrades. After Danielsen Fine Homes has had a chance to improve the home’s safety and comfort, Andy and his company will be asked to make a return trip to Angels Camp in order to complete a case study on the home, including a “before” and “after” analysis.
