Two Choral Groups Featured in Family Concert December 14th in Angels Camp

Angels Camp, CA....As a “Prelude to the Season” the Calaveras Arts Council’s “Ovations” is presenting a special holiday choral concert for families on Sunday, December 14th at 3:00 pm. in the Dr. Ellliott Smart Performing Arts Center, also known as The Bret, on the campus of Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp. Sharing the program, which begins at 3:00 pm, will be the 20-member men’s Stockton Portsmen and the local 20-member women’s choir Mountain Melody. Tickets are only $10 each for adults, and $5 each for youth under 18. Proceeds will benefit the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program and the Arts in Education Program of the Council. ....

The event promises to be a fun experience to bring the whole family to, dressed up for the holidays or not.

The Stockton Portsmen was organized and received its Charter from the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing of America in 1954. They meet at the Port of Stockton. The many quartets developed in this Chapter have won applause and spread the joy of four-part harmony throughout much of California and Nevada. In 2000 the Chorus had the distinction of winning the Society’s Nor-Cal East Plateau A divisional title in Salinas. Over the years, the Portsmen have won many other awards and have entertained audiences throughout the state with their “Barbershop Style” of singing.

Mountain Melody was created in the fall of 2005 when a group of friends had the desire to sing as an ensemble. They are committed to music memorization in order to enhance

the musical experience for the singers and audience members alike. They work on an

ever-expanding repertoire for their performances during the holiday season and in the spring. Director is Julia Shelby, Mountain Ranch. Music has been a part of her life from a very young age as she received instruction in a variety of instruments and as a singer. For ten years, Shelby has been a member of the Peninsula Women’s Chorus which is internationally recognized for its quality and innovation in music selection and presentation. Shelby brings this expertise to Mountain Melody making it the premiere women’s choir in Calaveras County.

You will be impressed by the two group’s artistry and versatility when their lush harmonies are infused into songs of the season and beyond. The December 14 show is sure to bring you some good listening, fun and many smiles.

The next of five remaining performances of 2009 season of “Ovations”, presented by the Calaveras Arts Council, continues on Sunday, January 11 with Peter Rowan, considered one of the most influential singers and songwriters in contemporary bluegrass for over four decades. Presenting international star Peter Rowan and his bluegrass band is a major step upwards for the local arts council.

Tickets for Peter Rowan will be $25 each adult; $10 youth under 18. Tickets for all “Ovations” performances may be ordered on-line at

www.highsierratickets.com, including Season Tickets for all six performances. Call the Calaveras Arts Council for information at (209) 754-1774.
