child development instruction. Anticipated project completion date is December 2009.

The $6.3 million building project is funded by Measure E, which was passed by voters in the area served by the Yosemite Community College District (YCCD), of which Columbia College is a part. Among them are residents of Tuolumne and southern Calaveras Counties.

Plans also call for an Outdoor Learning Center classroom as part of the play area adjacent to the Preschool Center. This feature will be an all-weather outdoor space where children can engage in a wide range of activities in a natural setting – block play, dramatic play and art, to name a few.

The project will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certified, making the group of new buildings the first in the YCCD and one of the first in the Mother Lode region to receive that designation. The rating is the nationally recognized and accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance and sustainability in buildings.

The new center will enable the college to nearly double the space for its program that serves students, staff, families and children.

Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Columbia College’s Child Care Center serves as a learning laboratory to prepare college practicum students vocationally for work with children and families, addressing the local and statewide shortage of highly qualified early childhood professionals. In addition, the Child Development Instructional Program will have access to state-of-the-art tools to train early childhood educators in the latest educational techniques and practices. The new, larger facility will have additional space also enabling the center to offer families more intensive on-site services from outside agencies addressing health, behavioral health, special education, and parenting support.

The Child Care Center offers high quality care for children from infancy though preschool, or 0-5 years of age. As a state subsidized program, the center provides free or low cost child care to families, who are income eligible and in need of these services based on work and/or school activities. Further, the Foster Kinship Care and Education (FKCE) Program is an important component of the college’s Family Services Program, which trains foster and kinship providers in Tuolumne, Mariposa and Calaveras Counties.

Along with Dr. Joan Smith, Columbia College president and Dr. Roe Darnell, YCCD chancellor, event hosts include the YCCD Board of Trustees: Abe Rojas, chairperson; Paul Neumann, vice chairperson; Pat Dean; Desirree Abshire; Anne DeMartini; Linda Flores; Tom Hallinan; and Bernard Vasquez, student trustee.

The architecture will be designed by Paul Roberts & Partners, Inc. of Vallejo and project management is handled by Kitchell, CEM of Modesto.
