Master Gardeners' Offer a New Perspective on Roses
San Andreas, CA....Gardeners often experience frustration growing roses. Many rose plants currently available are susceptible to disease, need regular pruning, have little fragrance, and do poorly in our foothill climate. Anyone who loves roses in their garden, but is searching for an easier way to grow them, will want to attend the Master Gardeners’ Open Garden Day on Saturday, October 25th....
Starting at 10:15 a.m. Master Gardeners will present: “A New Perspective on Roses”. This program will focus on how gardeners can make better decisions when selecting roses for foothill gardens as well as proper rose care and how to protect roses from deer and other pests. Amazing as it may seem, there are roses that require no winter pruning, very seldom succumb to diseases, and have little or no thorns. Many such roses are “heritage roses” which were brought to this area by the pioneers. There will be information provided about heritage roses and some varieties will be offered for sale.
At the end of the rose presentation a 15 minute workshop will be offered on how to make protective wire planting baskets. These baskets are placed in the ground when planting and used to protect plants from damaging pests such as gophers and moles.
In addition to the rose talk, at 11 a.m. the Children’s Garden will be open. This month’s Children’s Garden topic is pumpkins. Master Gardeners will teach the kids all about pumpkins and offer them a variety of activities involving this big squash.
The October 25 Open Garden Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Garden at the Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas.
Gardening information is offered free of charge. In addition, the learning center will be staffed by Master Gardeners who will answer questions and give out handy reference “Quick Tips” cards on controlling aphids. Tours of the demonstration garden will also be available.
When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.
