Hot Seats Compete in Unique Fundraiser....:"Calaveras Chairs for Charity"

Murphys, CA....Three county non-profit groups are collaborating on a unique fund-raiser called Calaveras Chairs for Charity – an auction of unusual chair art by professional artists and inspired craftsmen. Calaveras Chairs for Charity combines art, music and philanthropy fun in a Jan. 31 event at the Native Sons Hall in Murphys. Local artists, community groups and crafty individuals are creating chair art to be auctioned and rousing rounds of Xtreme Musical Chairs will entertain the crowd. The event begins at 6 p.m. and includes entertainment, a chair art exhibit and auctions and appetizers. A no-host bar will be available. Tickets are $25 and go on sale Oct. 15.....

“It’s a fun time with a serious purpose,” says Brent Harrington, president of the Calaveras Community Foundation. The Foundation makes an impact in the lives of local residents by funding grassroots organizations that deliver a variety of services in Calaveras communities. It has joined forces with the Calaveras Arts Council and Soroptimist International of Calaveras County for this unusual fund-raiser. Harrington notes, “Chairs for Charity will furnish funds for the many programs and activities our organizations support to enrich the lives of area residents.”

The Arts Council is recruiting professional artists to create chairs to be sold in a live auction. Chairs from community groups and individuals will be featured in a silent auction. Those attending will each receive a ballot to vote for the “People’s Choice” award recognizing the most creative chair and then can vote for their personal favorite in the “Hot Seat” competition at the rate of $1 per vote.

Xtreme Musical Chairs rounds will be held throughout the evening with a final round concluding the fun.

“It’s an unusual creative opportunity for local artists to express themselves,” notes Arts Council President Ed Cline. “We already have more than ten artists committed to the project.” Several chairs are on display at the Arts Council Gallery at 22 Main Street in San Andreas. Artists, community groups and individuals who want to create chairs for the auction should call the Arts Council at 754-1774.

“We invite other community groups to join CCF, the Arts Council and Soroptimists in this fun, fund-raising project, says Soroptimist President Karen Strand. “Everyone participating receives 20 percent of the auction price of their chair and the remaining proceeds go to the sponsoring groups for their many community projects benefiting local residents.”

Tickets go on sale Oct. 15 and will be available at the Arts Council Gallery; by calling 754-1774 or at www.highsierratickets.com.
