Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival Opened November 1, Next Showing December 4th at Alchemy, Continues Through Season!

Murphys, CA....Patagonia returns to Murphys for a fifth Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival on Tour with an exciting new program. Instead of the usual single weekend festival, films this year will be screened on four evenings at four different venues. Two evenings will be free. The program begins Saturday, November 1 at the Black Bart Theater with four hours of adventure and environmental films not usually seen in the local theaters....

Opening Night Films (Saturday, November 1)

Love Song to Glen Canyon.
This beautiful film is a journey through the 10 magical years Katie Lee enjoyed running the Glen before this idyllic and beloved landscape was drowned. The viewer runs the emotional rapids of 140 largely unpublished photos set to Katie’s narrative and heartfelt music. The magnitude of what’s been lost is readily apparent, even to those who never knew Glen Canyon as it once was. We see the canyons through the eyes of her love—pre-dam—and then through the eyes of her loss—post-flood. (Katie Lee, USA, 2006, 30 min.)

Everything's Cool. This is a "toxic comedy" about the most dangerous chasm ever to emerge between scientific understanding and political action—Global Warming. EVERYTHING'S COOL features a renowned cast of scientists, journalists and activists including Step It Up's Bill McKibben, Pulitzer Prize winner Ross Gelbspan, The Weather Channel's Dr. Heidi Cullen, the "bad boys of environmentalism" Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus, and White House whistleblower Rick Piltz. Multiple Awards, including Sundance Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Vermont International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Ashland Independent Film Festival, Bergen International Film Festival (Daniel B. Gold and Judith Helfand, US, 2007, 89 minutes)

Papalotzin: Flight of the Monarch Butterfly. Every year, fifty million tiny Monarch butterflies fly a mind-blowing 6,000 km route to their winter sanctuaries in the Oyamel forests of Central Mexico, only to be confronted by extreme dangers. This film chronicles the extraordinary adventure of pilot Vico Gutierrez, whose passion for the Monarchs consumes his entire existence. In his ultra-light plane camouflaged with the colors of this majestic butterfly, Vico embarks on an expedition from Canada that reveals the fragile life of the Monarchs and discovers butterfly fanatics who are protecting this migration for future generations. (Gregory Allen, 2006, 57 minutes)

The Story of Stuff. The film is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns that exposes the connections between environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever. (Louis Fox, U.S. 2008, 20 minutes)

Festival Sponsor
Patagonia, the innovative outdoor clothing manufacturer, and the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL at www.syrcl.org), one of the nation’s most successful grassroots activist groups, have joined forces to present the Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival. The festival was founded in 2003 by SYRCL and is based in Nevada City, California.

The festival goes on tour after its annual opening in Nevada City in January, and is hosted by non-profit groups around the US. “The Festival tour is a natural extension of SYRCL’s work to inspire people to act on behalf of the environment,” says Jason Rainer, SYRCL’s Executive Director. With the support of Patagonia, local groups such as EPFW bring the tour to their local communities.

Patagonia, founded by world–famous climber and environmentalist Yvon Chouinard, uses its business to inspire and implement solutions to environmental issues. It has been a champion of environmental causes since early 1970, when the company gave support to their hometown group, the Friends of the Ventura River. In 1986, the organization committed to donate 10% of profits each year to these groups. The company later upped the ante to 1% of net sales, or 10% of profits, whichever was greater. They have kept that commitment, giving away 2.3 million dollars in 2005.

Festival Host
The mission of Ebbetts Pass Forest Watch (Arnold, California) is to protect, promote and restore healthy forests and watersheds while maintaining quality of life in the Sierra Nevada. EPFW promotes responsible, sustainable timber harvest practices through public education, legal action, and coordination with other conservation groups.
