West Nile Virus: First 2008 Human Case in Calaveras
Copperopolis, CA....The Calaveras County Public Health Department reported its first human case of West Nile virus this year. A 48 year old resident of Copperopolis became ill in late August and has since recovered. The resident had traveled out of state and it is unknown where the infection occurred...
Two hundred and five human cases of West Nile virus have been reported statewide this year in 22 counties. There have been 5 deaths due to West Nile virus in California to date. Persons over age 50 or with a weakened immune system are at greater risk of serious illness or death. Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer, advises residents to seek medical care if they experience fever, headache, neck stiffness, muscle weakness or disorientation.
West Nile virus is spread to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes. A West Nile virus positive bird was reported from San Andreas last month. Calaveras County residents should continue personal and environmental preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. “The West Nile virus season continues until we see a sustained drop in temperature,” said Dr. Kelaita. “High levels of mosquito activity generally continue until the end of October,” added Kelaita.
Dr. Kelaita advises residents to continue taking preventive steps to limit exposure to mosquitoes. These simple steps can help residents protect themselves from West Nile
virus:
DEET – Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaradin or oil of lemon eucalyptus following the label instructions
DAWN & DUSK – Dawn and dusk are peak mosquito biting times. Limit outdoor activities during these periods.
DRESS - Dress to avoid mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and by tucking pant legs into socks when outdoors.
DRAIN – Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Mosquitoes can breed in very small amounts of water. Drain water that collects around your home. Check for standing water in empty flower pots, buckets, barrels, wading pools, old tires and other containers. Mosquito proof your home by checking screens to be sure they are fitted well and do not have holes. Mosquito fish and dunks can be used in areas where standing water cannot be removed.
The Calaveras County Environmental Health Department’s Mosquito and Vector Control Program provides assistance with reducing mosquito breeding areas, including spraying to eliminate mosquito adults and larvae. Reports of neglected pools and requests for mosquito abatement assistance can be directed to the Vector Control Program at 754-6383 or www.cc.vector.com.
Educational materials and links to state and federal resources are on the Public Health website at www.co.calaveras.ca.us or call 754-6460 for more information.
