Harvesting the Best at the Fest~By Jan Hovey
Murphys, CA.....What do organic produce, wine tasting, painted frogs, home improvement, gourmet food, live music, gardening, therapeutic massage, fine art, ski swaps, nugget hunt and great deals have in common? Find them all at the Harvest Home Festival Sept. 20 and 21at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys. Parking and admission are free of charge.....
“We’ve taken home, garden and recreation to an entirely new level,” said Patti Hennessee, event coordinator. “We have gathered over 80 exhibitors who are experts in their fields showcasing everything from solar power, interior design and landscape design to zip lines, sporting goods and arts and crafts.”
Attractions include wine tasting with wine glass sales supporting Habitat for Humanity, Calaveras, a Calaveras Painted Frog Rally - gathering the 2008 painted frogs in one location, live on-location “Spin & Win” with Star 92.7 on Saturday, farmer’s market and a nugget hunt for exciting prizes.
Live music is going to surround the Festival with Sequoia performing from 2 to 4 p.m. and Mercer Guitar holding an open jam session from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, Columbia College musicians entertain from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with another Mercer Guitar jam session closing the event from 2 to 4 p.m. Festival goers are encouraged to bring their guitars and join the jam session or simply sit in the shade taking in the bountiful gardens that are signature at Ironstone Vineyards.
“It’s also a great time to get ready for winter sports,” adds Hennessee. Four Seasons Sports will offer discounts on used equipment, as well as showcase the new line for the 2008/2009 ski season. The Calaveras Visitors Bureau will offer great ideas for recreating close to home, saving gas and money. Sierra Nevada Recreation Company will talk about their two 1500-foot zip lines, as well as five public access caverns awaiting exploration.
Growling stomachs will not be a problem as Ironstone Vineyards offers their ever-popular barbecue beside shaded picnic tables.
A number of community organizations will be there as well, including Habitat for Humanity Calaveras, the Calaveras Humane Society, Calaveras Grown, Independence Hall Quilters, Loose Threads Quilt Guild and Operation Military Support.
Fall is one of the best times to plant, so Rising Sun Nursery, The Garden Gate and Funkey’s Custom Gardens and Transitions Design Concepts will provide new ideas that can solve garden challenges and even save water.
The event is hosted by the Calaveras Enterprise, and event sponsors are Mark Twain – St. Joseph’s Hospital, Mr. Electric, Sol Sierra and Pinnell’s Carpet One.
“This is going to be an event you’ll want to linger longer,” Hennessee said. “This is truly a community gathering, bringing all that is best in our area together at one beautiful location.”
