On The County Strategic Plan ~ Albert J. Segalla

San Andreas, CA...We are fortunate in how well the Supervisors work together and with the CAO. There is some public concern about expanding government with subsequent loss of human rights to life, liberty and property. Also, loss of home rule.

One way this expansion seems to occur is the funding of our needs by government grants which come with strings.

The courts have ruled that the entity which government subsidies it should control. I agree.

We seem to have created hundreds of regulations which tend to stifle business and development while increasing the tax burden even though the grants are "free money".

What now? Perhaps we could start by paying our own way. This means planning and budgeting for the future.

Why not study our present commitments, plus work with other entities to find ways to bring about freedom friendly solutions?

Shouldn't this be part of our Strategic Plan?

Albert J. Segalla,
Copperopolis, CA

Ha Ha, that's funny. Definitely lots of strings attached to the 9M of debt this county has accrued. Doubt all that great leadership we have in San Andreas wants to talk about responsibility for it at all.

If Calaveras couldn't dig its way out of this kind of debt in the past couple of (COVID) years with so much real estate being sold as second homes and/or transplants, it never will. There's a reason the interim CAO is calling the initial plan for county budgeting, "The first bite of the apple..."

Key words "interim CAO". That's all we ever have it seems.

A military grade assault vehicle that the Sheriff thought the SO needed.
        New County jail.
I see plenty of brand new County vehicles driving down the road.
Ask the license holding cannabis growers what they think about the County debt.
Pot prices are so low right now that there aren't many illegal grows out there.
Around September of next year, a blind man would be able to find the pot farms. Legal and illegal.

Government officials keep saying we need to find new revenue streams. Well, guys, you basically chased the golden goose out of the county when you chased the legal marijuana growers away. Calaveras is filled with old ranch properties who pay old tax rates and basically nothing by contemporary standards.

Those open rolling hill, grassy, wildflower ranch lands are what makes Calaveras a visually pleasing pastoral place to live. Nothing at all nice or picturesque about trashy giant plastic hoop houses everywhere.

Pot can be grown in any of the large empty industrial city yards and buildings. Absolutely no need to destroy the beautiful countryside, along with luring up mentally ill degenerates and felons looking to steal it.

Murphys was just destroyed with no foresight in a community plan, as to preserving the historic natural beauty unique to place. Another nail in the coffin of the once visually pleasing old gold rush town. Greedily cramming in another cookie cutter, city subdivision on top of the little old town.

Now all it needs is adding some more cheap tacky stucco mini mansions on top of all the knolls, hills and mountains. Along with more industrial metal buildings to call wineries and it will be just like El Dorado Hills.

It would be nice if we had our own Starbucks and McDonald's in Murphys.

There is much to be said about what once was called a bedroom community. It allows an area to be a nice peaceful country place to live and raise families, within a reasonable commute to cities.

"Government officials keep saying we need to find new revenue streams."

Those transplant government officials you speak of need to be preserving the unique to place Mother Lode they are living in. Greedy city think has no place here. Bigger is not better.
