Mosquito Fire is 41,443 Acres, 10% Contained, 1,808 Total Personnel, Fire Behavior Moderates

Foresthill, CA...Fire activity moderated Saturday night as humidity increased. Smoke and clouds over the fire Sunday should somewhat reduce fire behavior, although the vegetation remains critically dry and is burning readily. Firefighters are taking full advantage of the reduced fire behavior and using direct-suppression tactics as much as they can. Where they are unable to get close to the fire's edge, they are using indirect tactics, such as using heavy equipment to create new fireline or open firelines from previous fires that have since grown over with brush and trees.

Wildfire Safety Solutions

The decision to evacuate a community is done with an understanding of the inconvenience it places on those who live and work in a community, but the safety and lives of community members is obviously a priority. The incident management team, incident commanders, sheriffs, and others meet daily and communicate frequently about fire behavior and evacuations. There are numerous evacuation orders and warnings in effect for both Placer County and El Dorado County. If you have not already evacuated, do so if you are under an evacuation order. If you are under a warning, ensure that you are prepared and ready to evacuate at a moment's notice.

The best place to view the evacuation zones and where you are in relation to them is your county's interactive maps:

Basic Information

Current as of 9/11/2022, 6:26:48 AM
Incident Type Wildfire
Cause Under Investigation
Date of Origin Tuesday September 06th, 2022 approx. 06:27 PM
Location 4 miles east of Foresthill and north of Oxbow Reservoir
Incident Commander Rick Young (CIIMT 5), Jim Hudson (CAL FIRE), Dusty Martin (CAL FIRE), Connie Schmidt (PCSO)
Coordinates 39.006 latitude, -120.745 longitude

Current Situation

Total Personnel 1,808
Size 41,443 Acres
Percent of Perimeter Contained 10%
Fuels Involved Vegetation--timber, brush, and hardwood litter--is critically dry. Any beneficial effects of a relative-humidity increase will be slight and brief. Vegetation will remain primed for extreme fire behavior.
Significant Events Fire behavior Saturday was moderate, consisting of isolated torching, uphill runs, and short-range spotting. When air cleared, the fire exhibited isolated torching and slope runs, especially on the southwest side near Georgetown. Elsewhere around the perimeter, fire behavior was reduced under the smoke inversion. Critically dry vegetation is readily igniting and burning despite the improved weather. When rollouts occurred, the fire made upslope runs.

Saturday night, fire behavior moderated as humidity increased.

Outlook

Planned Actions * Provide structure defense and point protection for values at risk.

* Protect private timberlands.

* Scout for opportunities to construct containment lines.

* Perform firing operations where appropriate.

* Construct direct and indirect line as conditions and opportunities allow.
Projected Incident Activity 12-hour time frame:

Spread will be limited Saturday night due to overnight humidity recovery. Diurnal downslope/down-canyon flows will try to push fire toward the southwest communities in El Dorado County.

24-hour time frame:

Increased humidity and limited mixing will temporarily reduce fire behavior. Spread will follow ridgelines on the northeast and southeast sides of the fire.
Remarks The fire is being managed under unified command between the USDA Forest Service (California Interagency Incident Management Team 5), CAL FIRE, and Placer County Sheriff.

Current Weather

Weather Concerns On Saturday, smoky skies and passing clouds along with cooler temperatures and higher humidity than previous days kept the fire environment more stable.

Saturday night, smoke settled over the fire, winds were light, temperatures were cooler and humidity recovery was good.

No big weather changes are forecast for Sunday. Smoke and clouds will expected to shade the fire, resulting in somewhat reduced fire behavior. High temperatures will be generally in the 80s and minimum humidity 25-30%. Winds will generally be southwest 5-10 mph.
