East Bay Rhythm and Blues Big Band Heads to Angels Camp for “Music in the Parks"
Angels Camp, CA....The band that earned the accolade of “Best Band” in a recent readers poll of an East Bay publication will be performing at the August 13 “Music in the Parks” concert in Utica Park of Angels Camp. The Delta Wires will be presented by the Calaveras County Arts Council starting at 6:30 pm. Bring picnics, chairs, and plan on having a rousing good time in the spacious tree-shaded park that is located on Highway 49 and Sams Way.....
The Delta Wires is an Oakland-based , seven-piece rhythm and blues band that was founded 35 years ago by lead vocalist and harmonica player Ernie Pinata. What began as a college project – an anthology of blues music from the Mississippi Delta to the South Side of Chicago – has evolved into the band that has been wowing Bay Area crowds with its versatility and crisp, tight professional sound. The instrumentation is the same now, as then: harmonica, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, and three horns. The Delta Wires have shared the stage with the likes of Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison, Jerry Garcia, just to name a few. Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle has written, “…tough, rocking, socking band, knocking out crowds …the Wires are burning up!”
Ernie Pinata started playing harmonica when he was 16 and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts where he formed the DELTA WIRES as an undergraduate project. A student of renowned Oakland vocal coach, Judy Davis, Ernie is now has gained a reputation as an extremely energetic performer and one of the most emotional harmonica players on the scene today.
Others in the band include Richard Healey on guitar and Dave Coltrara on bass guitar and vocals. The saxophonists are Jim Orsetti and Danny Sandoval. Trumpeter is Larry Jonutz, the original trumpet player in the band, Cold Blood, and he has appeared with such classic notables as Lou Rawls and the Coasters. Toiny Huszar is on drums. Blues Access magazine describes the Delta Wires as “…a tight horn section blending comfortably with the spirited, intense harmonica of Ernie Pinata—as fierce a Sonny Boy Williamson-influenced harp as you will find.”
