Whittle Vegetation Management Prescribed Burn to be Ignited June 13th

Angels Camp, CA...The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will conduct a prescribed burn and training on the Whittle Vegetation Management Program (VMP) site in Calaveras County on Monday, June 13, 2022.

The primary purpose of the prescribed burn is to reduce hazardous fuel around Fowler Peak Lookout, communication towers, and surrounding infrastructure located on top of the Bear Mountain Range just East of Copperopolis and West of Angels Camp.

The prescribed burn will consist of approximately 60 acres along the ridgetop. Smoke will be visible from Highway 49 and Highway 4. Resources assigned will consist of engines, fire crews, and bulldozers.

Burning will be conducted from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. contingent on weather and fire activity.

Best way to prevent fires is to remove fuels.
        Prescribed burning is the cheapest.
Escaped fires are going to happen. Immediate response is key.
I trust the paid professional over Joe Public.
Sunday would have been perfect for a 1 day or 1 day limited burning. Cool Temps and humidity would have given many a quick chance to eliminate fuels that accumulated during May. Fallen branches and needles accumulate quickly. New growth happens quickly from the spring precipitation.
2 days of open burning could have made it possible for landowners and fire professionals to elimate some of the fuels that will make all of us nervous in September and October.
Common sense is needed to make these decisions.
Unfortunately, the Air Board controls whether we burn or not.
The fire professionals need to have the last say.

'Fire Professionals' just burnt up 500 beautiful square miles of New Mexico. That said, there's no friggin way I would trust my new neighbors burning on a dry day like yesterday, as nice as it was. They can't even identify a rattlesnake. Why the heck would you trust their judgement with their 1st burn pile with dry grass and brush around? Decisions of 'fire professionals' like you cause catastrophes like New Mexico and what we saw around Markleeville last year.
