Bone Marrow Transplant Drive for Martin Shebby On Tuesday August 12th
San Andreas, CA...Dear Pine Tree Viewers I am asking you to help me with a very important and emergent task. I need to have EVERYONE in Calaveras County and beyond know that I am organizing a Bone Marrow Donor Drive in San Andreas at The Delta Blood Bank on Tuesday the 12th of August which is this coming Tuesday. The address is 164 E. St. Charles Street in San Andreas. This will only involve a cheek swab and will not be painful. THE REASON...
My very dear friend Martin Shebby who owns The Red Apple Cafe in Aptos where I used to live was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukemia this past May and it has not responded to the chemo treatments he has already done. Neither of his siblings are a match nor his only child.
I was fortunate in having the support of this community about 11 years ago when our family lost our son Max to his heart condition after a bad surgery went terribly wrong. At the time Kathy Thomas, Dr. Ken Thomas's wife and LOT'S of others put together a blood drive in Max's honor to replace the many units of blood they used trying to save Max's life. I now have an opportunity to "pay it forward" and I hope that even though you may not know Martin, you will appreciate that one day this could save your life or that of another loved one. Martin has spent many days visiting here in Calaveras County and loves to fish up here and see the friends that he has that have moved here from The Greater Santa Cruz Area.
Please come and get your cheek swabbed. It won't take much time out of your day and you may save someone's life. that's the Ultimate "Paying it Forward".
Sincerely,
Malana Warren
There will be a BLOOD and marrow drive in the VERY near future at another site.
-----Help Save Lives------
More Ethnically Diverse Donors Needed to Join National Marrow Donor Program Registry
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is encouraging all ethnically diverse people to join in a mission to save lives by joining the NMDP Registry. A marrow donor registration drive, in conjunction with the Martin Shebby Marrow Drive will be held on Tuesday August 12th, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Delta Blood Bank at 164 E. St. Charles Street in San Andreas, Ca.
All ethnically diverse people are encouraged to enter the registry. Because the characteristics that determine whether a patient and donor match are inherited, the most likely match is with a sibling. However, 70 percent of patients will not find a family match. They must rely on volunteer marrow and blood stem cell donors. Although it is possible for a diverse patient to match a donor from any racial or ethnic group, the most likely match is someone who shares a similar heritage.
Each year, thousands of patients are diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases such as leukemia and aplastic anemia. Each day, at least 6,000 patients are in need of a transplant. To survive, these patients need blood stem cells to help their bodies make new, healthy marrow. Blood stem cells are immature cells that can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Blood stem cells usually live in bone marrow but are also released, in small numbers, into the blood stream.
The first step to becoming a committed volunteer donor is to join the NMDP Registry. Volunteers must be between the ages of 18 to 60 and in good health. After completing a brief health questionnaire, volunteer donors give a small cheek swab sample and sign a consent form.
To find out more about unrelated transplantation as a life-saving therapy, becoming a marrow or blood stem cell donor, donating umbilical cord blood, and other ways to help, please visit www.marrow.org, or call Cynthia Carlson at 510-495-4021.
I am trying to get donations to cover the costs for this drive but if you can please help us out in this way. It IS tax-deductible.
