Happy 100th Birthday Ruth James ~By Jessica Corley

Angels Camp, CA....Ruth Vivian James was born in Gridley, California on July 29, 1908. She is turning 100 tomorrow. Her parents James and Mariah Davis were much older than many child bearing couples at the time. Her mother was around the age of forty and her father was in his late 40’s early 50’s. They were married at older ages as well and had Ruth shortly after. Her mother acquired Malaria and passed away when Ruth was around two years old. Her father was left to raise her by himself.......

Family believes this may be why she has always been so spoiled; as her father devoted much attention and affection toward her. In the year 1928, Ruth was 19 years old she married Noel James. Noel was a man who showed her similar patience and generosity as her father. He too was from Gridley, California. Noel worked in Cal Pine, a logging community.

In 1940 Ruth and Noel along with their two children Annabelle, 9 and George, who was not even a year old, moved to White Pines. Here Ruth was very active in the community and became a part time postal clerk. Noel continued logging.

Upon retirement Ruth and Noel traveled in their camper for about 20 years. They traveled throughout a good portion of the Midwest and Western United States. They did take one cruise with fellow AARP members, but realized they enjoyed their camper much more. In fact, some of George’s fondest memories were of the many trips from White Pines to Gridley for hunting, fishing and Thanksgiving dinner.

He remembers nearly every 4th of July being a camping trip for him and his parents along with Annabelle and her family. “The ‘grub’ box was always filled with food to be prepared at the campsite, I don’t ever remember going hungry.” Deer season was much the same, usually camping near Markleeville with Uncle Virge and Aunt Lilly.

George also remembers spending all day picking blackberries with his parents. Ruth would spend the next few days making jam wih the help of George and his friends. The family still remembers all the jars in the basement as Ruth and Noel often made grape juice from their own vines. “It would take several jars to get through a single meal with them,” George recalls. Noel passed away in 1982. Today, Ruth happily lives at Foothill Village in Angels Camp where her family often visits.

She is blessed with seven grandchildren; Jim, Tone, Tami, Tim, Chris, Jennifer, and Joanne, 15 great grandchildren; Mandy, Justin, Jeff, Jannelle, Katianne, Tina, Heather, Brandon, Renee, Ann, Jennifer, Pete, Jon, Saedy and Schelby as well as great-great grandchildren; Marina, Kaitlynn, Johnathon, Hunter, Destiney, Sikoya, Sheyanne, Jackglen, Emmaleigh, Tony, Brean, Kyle, Alesandra, Donald, Kevin, Lexis, Jeremy and Madison. Ruth has lived a life full of family, fun, travel, love and happiness.

Happy Birthday Ruth!
