Chamber of Commerce Celebrates the National Cowboy Day with Dinner and Dancing ~By Hanna Alldrin

Angels Camp, CA....A little bit of country and history took place on Saturday at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp. Since cowboys are such an important part of the history and heritage of Calaveras County, the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce celebrated the cowboy with a Barbecue Dinner and Dance. The National Day of the American Cowboy.....

is celebrated on the fourth Saturday in July. This years National Day of the American Cowboy was held on Saturday the 26th. According to the National Horse Council the days history started when Senator Craig Thomas of Wyoming introduced a resolution to designate July 23rd, 2005 as “National Day of the American Cowboy.” The resolution spelled out what it is to be an American Cowboy, the pioneering men and women who helped establish the American West, describing them as icons that embody “honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, respect, a strong work ethic, and patriotism”.

"I'm a Cowgirl. I ride horses and fix fences. When I sit in the dirt I get really dirty," shared 9 year old Victoria Ficher from West Point. The Senate passed the resolution on May 12th and encouraged Americans to observe the special day with appropriate ceremonies and activities to honor our American Cowboys of the past, present and future. President George W. Bush proclaimed the fourth Saturday in July National Day of the Cowboy.

The Chamber celebrated the national day with a Dinner Dance. The event started at 5:30pm Saturday evening. The event was held in the beautiful outside Beer Garden at Frogtown. Beef, cooked in a barrel was served and cooked by the Cattlemen's Association of Calaveras County. Before dinner started over 50 ranchers brought their farms brands to brand the first annual fence branding. The fence will roam throughout Calaveras County and end up in its permanent home, the Red Barn in San Andreas. The fences first stop will be Ironstone Vineyards and then it will go to Green Horn Creek in Angels Camp.

After inheriting his grandfathers 150 year old brand, Trevor Aroila from Angels Camp started his own herd and hopes to someday start his own ranch. "When my grandfather passed away my grandmother gave me the transfer papers for the brand. The brand is number 75 and someday I would like to start a ranch called "Ranch 75." This has always been a passion and future plan to start my own ranch. Right now I have two cows that produce a calf annually," shared Trevor.

The chamber also hosted a Cutest Cowgirl and Best Wranglers contest while The California Outlaws, a local country western band played popular country songs. The dinner was a huge success. There were over 200 people who attended the National American Cowboy Dinner and Dance. "We hope to make this celebration an annual event, to help preserve our local history," shared Diane Gray.
