Madrone Building Project Groundbreaking on August 12th
Columbia, CA....Columbia College will host a groundbreaking ceremony for its Madrone Building project on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 9:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend the event, which will be held at the present Madrone Building site on the college campus, located off Sawmill Flat Road in Sonora.....
Built in 1971, the existing Madrone Building is a 5,439 sq. ft. structure that houses classroom labs and offices for Columbia College’s automotive technology and welding technology programs. The welding lab will be relocated, freeing up much needed floor area for automotive technology training. This will provide a better, more efficient floor plan with maximum utilization of space.
A new 7,562 sq. ft. building will be constructed about 90 feet from the Madrone Building location. This facility will become a separate auto body collision repair site with painting booth, as well as a modern welding technology lab. An office area, storage and restrooms are also included in the plans. Construction of the new building will allow program expansion and future growth for two strong instructional programs that are presently housed in inadequate space.
“Complete renovation of the existing Madrone Building would have required extensive and costly structural upgrades,” said Connie Mical, the college’s vice president of administration. “Producing a new, compliant building was less expensive and will give the program more usable square footage for student use.”
The estimated $2.3 million new building project is funded by Measure E, which was passed by voters in the area served by the Yosemite Community College District (YCCD), of which Columbia College is a part. Among them are residents of Tuolumne and southern Calaveras Counties. Another construction project funded by Measure E is the college’s new Public Safety Center, which had a groundbreaking ceremony on June 16.
Along with Dr. Joan Smith, Columbia College president and Dr. Roe Darnell, YCCD chancellor, event hosts include the YCCD Board of Trustees: Abe Rojas, chairperson; Paul Neumann, vice chairperson; Pat Dean; Desirree Abshire; Anne DeMartini; Linda Flores; Tom Hallinan; and Bernard Vasquez, student trustee.
The new facility’s architectural design is by Noll & Tam of Oakland and the contractor is Tri-Technic of Sonora. Project management is handled by Kitchell, CEM of Modesto. Estimated completion date is summer 2009.
