Playful Blue Shoes to Charm Murphys July 23rd!
The Blue Shoes Band will be performing a delightful combination of Vaudeville, Tin Pan Alley, Ragtime, Blues and other surprises when they take to the gazebo at Murphys Community Park on July 23, as part of the Calaveras Arts Council’s free “Music in the Parks” series. ....
The Blue Shoes Band is a five-member swing and blues group formed in 1990 originally as the duet of Peg Reza and Douglas Johnson. They have become known for playing favorites from the 1930’s and ‘40’s, when the ukulele was at the peak of fashion. Peg (Leg) Reza, also known as “Aunty Uke”, has a rich, sexy, playful voice and plays a mean ukulele. She’s got the blue shoes and a repertoire of stories and songs to beguile and delight. Be forewarned, she loves Hawaiian music too.
Douglas Johnson wails a wicked tune on his harmonica and he knows just when his penny whistle can add a touch of whimsy. He’s a snappy dresser too. Rick Stevens, a Santa Cruz local, will be on his Dobro, giving the music a southern flair and bluesy edge. Jeff Cooper is on acoustic guitar and smooth vocals, and John Kikugawa plays the bull fiddle and the stand-up bass.
Together, the Blue Shoes Band is sure to get your shoes, no matter what color, thumping.
The free concert starts at 6:30. To reach the park, take Highway 4 to Murphys. Turn onto Main Street to downtown Murphys, and then, take a left onto Algiers Street. The park is by the creek. The snack bar will be open. If you pack a picnic, think green and make it a paperless and no plastic picnic. Take home and wash your dishes and flatware. Bring your own chairs and get ready for a fun, relaxing evening. For more info, contact the Calaveras Arts Council at (209)754-1774 or at www.calaverasarts.org.
